  1. Internet randomly very slow Windows 10, only Microsoft Edge works normally

So I've been having this issue for months now where randomly out of nowhere my internet (connected with an Ethernet cable) becomes insanely slow. Though this only seems to happen when I'm not currently doing anything like the PC is idle at the desktop. It never happened when I'm playing games or browsing. For example today i started my PC went to the toilet, came back 5 minutes later, started Firefox and the internet was either not working or really slow. Steam wouldn't connect either, neither would Discord etc.

Now i thought i fixed the issue a month ago by installing the newest drivers for my Ethernet adapter but today it happened again like described above. The only thing that helps to completely resolve it until it happens again randomly either hours, days or a month later is restarting my PC. Nothing else helps but restarting my PC.

Now the strange thing is, when an internet speed test like Ookla finally loads and it starts, my internet download/upload and ms are all normal. Also when i ping my router i get a response within 1 ms. pinging google through the command prompt gives me roughly 14ms which is also normal but trying to access Google or any other website through Firefox takes like 2 minutes to load.

Now the strange thing is, since i tried almost anything i could think of i was like: hmm let's try Microsoft Edge. And to my surprise Edge was working perfectly, for example when i tried to load Facebook in Firefox it takes like 2 minutes, in Edge it loads instantly. Again after restarting my PC Firefox works normally again and so does Steam etc.

Now i read somewhere that this might have to do with your Microsoft account? Since I'm logged in with my Microsoft account in Edge it works normally. Can this be a thing? Has anyone else ever heard about this before? I have already completed reinstalled Windows 10 but this didn't work either. Since i use my Microsoft account to log into my PC, though this problem only started to occur like half a year ago randomly. I also have 2 laptops which i also log in on with my Microsoft account and these don't have this issue.

    PC Specs:

    • CPU: Intel i7 6700
    • GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070 FE
    • RAM: 16GB 2133Mhz dual channel
    • Motherboard: ASRock B150M-HDV
    • Network adapter: Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller
    • Windows version: Windows 10 Home, 10.0.18363

    What I've tried so far:

    • DNS flush, IP release/renew through command prompt.
    • Reinstalling network adapter drivers (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller).
    • Updating to the newest network adapter drivers.
    • Full network reset through Windows 10 option in Settings.
    • Disallowing Windows to turn off the internet adapter to save power in Device Manager.
    • Resetting the Modem and Router, i also moved my Ethernet cable directly into the router instead of the switch we use.
    • Updated Windows.
    • Formatted my drive and did a full clean Windows 10 install.
    • Turning the internet adapter off and back on in Windows 10.
    • Tried multiple DNS servers.
    • No viruses found with Windows Defender and Malwarebytes Free.
    • Tried netsh winsock reset in command prompt.
    • Pinging my router when the problem occurs gives me responses within 1 ms and no packet loss.

  2. Microsoft Edge Slow and Unresponsive

I had the same problem and followed the below guide from Microsoft Edge runs slow? We got the best fixes for that

Solution 1 – Set the New Location For Temporary Files

While resolving other problems on your computer, you probably run some troubleshooter, which corrupted your Temporary Internet Files folder, which means there’s no allotted cache space for Edge to work properly. To ‘re-gain’
Temporary Files directory, and make your Microsoft Edge work normally, follow these steps:

    • Open Internet Explorer (not Edge)
    • Click on the Gear icon, and select Internet Options
    • On the General tab, under Browsing History, go to Settings
    • On the Temporary Internet Files tab, click on Move folder…
    • Choose the new location for “Temporary Internet Files” folder (like C:\Temp)
    • Then set the Disk Space to use for example 1024MB and click OK
    • Open Microsoft Edge, and see if the browsing is now faster]

Microsoft Internet Explorer renamed to Windows Internet Explorer ?

Since version 7 of the world`s most popular web browser - Microsoft Internet Explorer was silently renamed to Windows Internet Explorer.Such a step from Microsoft is not a surprise since Internet Explorer is part of the Windows operation system for a long time.Obviously Microsoft corp. wants to state that Internet Explorer is already considered as a part of Windows and not as an external browser (remember the IE and WMP law issues last year!?).
