  1. Internet Speeds

Hi folks, just looking for some information here.

I have been a long-time Virgin Media customer and never really had cause to complain before. When we moved house back in May they had to do a fresh installation as they couldn't find the cable that came into the property despite at least four previous owners being VM customers. I have their 200Mbps Internet service and at the last house (a whole 3 miles away) regularly obtained full, or even a bit over, speed. In fact I never saw much below 195Mbps when checking on speedtest.net - connected via Ethernet cable.

Since moving to the new house I have been seeing speeds of 75-90Mbps - never more than 100, no matter what time of day I checked it. The computers are the same (1xdesktop PC, 2xlaptop PCs all running W10 plus 2xAndroid tablets and 1xAndroid phone and 1xiPhone). Today is the first time I have been at home with some time to investigate this issue so I called VM and their tech support did some tests before pronouncing the system healthy. They are firmly of the opinion that the computers aren't compatible with 200Mbps even though they were working fine before the move.

In addition to installing a new access cable VM provided a new set top box and modem when we moved in. The modem re-boots itself randomly and I have used that as an excuse to get a technician to visit and check the whole system out. They are supposedly sending an Internet specialist ... whatever one of those is.

Sorry, for the pre-amble but I thought it would save questions. So, here is my question to you guys: when I look at the network connection details I see a box titled "local area connection status" and under the heading "Connection" parameter "speed" with a value of 100Mbps. Is that the speed of the connection that I have or the maximum speed that the computer is capable of? The user manual for the mobo says the LAN is a Phy Gigabit LAN, which I assume means it is capable to I000Mbps.

Any help would be appreciated *Smile

    :)

How to setup Windows 10 Network and Internet speed?

Hi! Is there an option to select my internet speed? I have an 100 Mbps internet speed and I want to setup 'Windows 10' to this. Or it will auto-recognize the internet speed?

And another thing. On 'Windows 7' my download speeds went to approximate 100 Mbps. And on 'Windows 10' it goes to approximate 80 Mbps. Why? I contact the internet provider and they measured my internet speed and it went to 95+ Mbps. But my download speed
still stops near 80 Mbps. Why?

  3. Qualcomm Atheros AR8152 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30) is using just 100 Mbit in Win 10

    Hi,

    • Is the computer connected to Domain/server network?
    • Are you referring to internet speed?

You're probably getting this connection speed from the icon at your task tray, correct? That's the maximum
speed of your interface, which is 100MB/s, but that's not your actual
    internet speed.

To check your internet speed, Go online and search for internet speed test you will find few websites which will check your internet speed and provide the accurate results.

    Thanks,

Try SamKnows Speed Test, its more accurate.....Google for it.

Failing that do a Powershell (Admin).....copy paste the following, then press enter and restart computer.

    netsh winsock reset

Assuming your network card is a gig and the router is also a gig then it's negotiating the wrong speed with the router. Is your network cable cat5e if it's an old cable that can only do 100 met that would do it. If you have any wireless devices what speed do they get?

  6. Hi dencal,

I tried the samknows speed test and the results are pretty much the same:
Desktop PC - Download / Upload / Latency:
    Test 1: 65 / 12 / 15
    Test 2: 71 / 12 / 16
    Laptop PC (Ethernet):
    Test 1: 69 / 12 / 17
    Test 2: 76 / 11 / 15
    Laptop PC (WiFi):
    Test 1: 45 / 12 / 28
    Test 2: 29 / 12 / 28
    iPhone 5s (WiFi):
    Test 1: 80 / 12 / 16
    Test 2: 65 / 12 / 17
    Android Tablet (WiFi):
    Test 1: 37 / 12 /21
    Test 2: 45 / 12 / 16

Gonna try the Powershell trick in a minute ... I'll be back *Smile

  7. Hi Samuria,

Yes, all the cables are Cat5e - they're the same ones from the old house.

What could make the network card (it's on the mobo rather than a plug-in card) and the router get it wrong?

If your network card is set to full duples this can cause it as that send data both ways at the same time and a lot cant keep up with that so it drops speed down. The sonnected speed is between you and the router not you and the net

  11. Spent the best part of an hour on the phone with them just before starting this thread. They are adamant that there's nothing wrong at their end but are sending an engineer on Monday.

  12. I am set for 100 Mb down but my router slows it to about 90. If I bypass the router I get 120Mb's down I could get the 1Gb service but I will not pay $199 per month for it,

Whilst checking the settings for the network adapter I noticed that W10 reports the adapter as being an nVidia nForce with max speed of 100Mbps but the manual for the mobo (ASUS M2N68-CM) says it should be a 1Gb Realtek. Is it possible that Windows has applied a driver update and use the wrong one?

  14. Hi Josey *Smile

Here in the UK Virgin Media provide Internet connection as a "free service" as part of a TV/telephone package. Over the years they have increased speeds free of charge so that now you can have 200Mbps ostensibly for nothing if you pay for their most expensive TV bundle (about £90/month). This is the deal we have but as a long-time customer we get a substantial discount.

The fact that Internet is not paid for makes it harder to complain when they fail to deliver and they have recently been the subject of a consumer program investigation. Their get-out-of-jail-free is that their speeds are all advertised as "up to" *Smile

There's absolutely no way I would pay $200/m for broadband no matter how fast it is!

Couple of things to check, your cables are the old ones. have you tried putting it some new one at least the lan cable from Cable modem to router and router to your computer. its possible that one of the internal wires has gone bad. This happen to me, took me and the cable guy awhile to figure it out. Once I changed out the cable between modem and router my upload went to 4mb as it should have been
The repair guy will test your line coming out of the Modem have him show you this figure if it is showing the correct speeds, then the problem is your router or cables.
Check the settings on your Router and insure it is up to date with firmware
