    Internet Upload Speed

    I had been running Windows 11 for several years on my Dell XPX 8930, with Download speeds exceeding 900 Mbps and Upload speed in excess of 50 Mbps. I am using Cat 6 cable to connect to my modem-router. A few days ago the upload speed suddenly went down to about 1 Mbps.When I removed the Cat cable and connected via WIFI the Upload speed went back to about 50 Mbps. When I conected the same Cat cabe to my Laptop the Upload speed was again in excess of 50MbpsI cummunicated with my Internet provider and we concluded that that the problem was with the Computer-software and not the Internet provider

    Sudden large disparity between download & upload speeds.

    (First post: Win 10 1809) Hello. I have encountered what seems to me to be a strange phenomenon: Recently upgraded to "1000 Mbps" fiber internet provider. Initial speeds for both download and upload speeds spread across the 900's, with upload speeds consistently a bit higher than download speeds. Yesterday one desktop seemed to have internet connectivity issues. I noted that the desktops Ethernet connection had for some reason adopted the name of one of our wireless routers: What had been "Network 2" was now "(SSID) 2".

    This Dell XPS desktop (Win 10 Pro 64b, Version 1809) has both wired and wireless network connections, with the later used to connect to various peripherals. When I checked into Speedtest.net, Download speeds remained in the 900's, but upload speeds dropped below 50 Mbps. I went though various network troubleshooting steps and a number of restarts, this disparity persisted. Other than the lack of a name change to wired network connection, this disparity was also obtained on another desktop on the same network. However, speed checks on iOS tablet reveled no disparity whatsoever, suggesting that the phenomenon is limited to Windows machines.

    Given my naive and limited understanding of Windows networking, I was hoping someone might help me to better understand the issue and, perhaps, suggest a fix.

    Upload Speed

    To accurately measure your upload speed to the internet, every other device on your local network has to be taken off your local network, so that your computer is the only device on your network. You cannot accurately measure your upload speed while other devices are on the network.

    Once your computer is the only device on the network, the next step is to be sure that your computer's connection to the internet is correctly setup. For Ethernet this is very easy: Simply connect an Ethernet cable from your computer to one of the 4 LAN ports on your router. You don't have to do anything else. Where people sometimes go wrong is by changing all kinds of settings in Windows. For an Ethernet connection, this is completely unnecessary.

    The last step to take before you can accurately measure your upload speed is to clear your router's caches. This is easily done by powering off your router, counting to 30 (to be sure all the electricity has drained away) and then powering up your router. Give the router a couple of minutes to set itself up.

    Having done all this, you have accomplished three things:

    1- no other device is competing with your computer for bandwidth;

    2- no incorrect Windows settings are interfering with your network connection; and

    3- your router doesn't hold any old or incorrect data.

    Now you can measure your internet speed. The best way to do this is to use one of the publicly available internet speed testing websites - because they test your connection with dozens of separate pathways through the internet and show your your average download and upload speed.

    Keep in mind that there is no generally accepted method for determining internet speed, which is why different speed-testing websites will report different results. Nevertheless, you'll easily be able to see if you have a problem.
