Windows 10: Introducing Dictionary for PDF mini menu in Microsoft Edge

Hello Insiders! We have heard your feedback about supporting a dictionary feature to increase productivity while reading PDFs. We are excited to announce a new dictionary feature â our first step in the integration of smart actions in the Edge context menus.

The mini menu is an evolution of the context menu and allows quicker access to common browser actions and new smart actions like the define (dictionary) action. This new dictionary feature allows you to look up definitions of words while reading a PDF document in Microsoft Edge. This built-in dictionary is very easy to access and use. While reading a PDF file, simply select the word and a mini menu will appear near the word once itâs selected. You can invoke the definition card by clicking on the Define menu item. Alongside the definition, you can click the speaker button to hear the pronunciation. If you would like to search for more information about the word, you can click the 'Search for "selection"' to see more Bing powered web results in sidebar search. You can also access the dictionary feature in the right-click menu.

The dictionary feature is an addition to the mini menu for PDF annotations. In future edge versions, the on-selection menu and dictionary cards will also be supported on web pages in Microsoft Edge.

The dictionary feature is now available in Microsoft Edge Dev and Canary channels and supports these languages: German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Swedish, Norwegian, and Polish.

Introducing quick menu for PDF text annotations in Microsoft Edge

Annotating PDF files is one of the many productivity features that users love in Microsoft Edge. But some of the text annotations like text comments are only available via context menu today which involves multiple steps to invoke. Moreover, it may not be the easiest way for touch users to access these features. We are glad to introduce a new quick menu for PDFs which would make the PDF annotations experience more efficient and make you even more productive in Edge. Here is how this menu works:

If you select any piece of text on a PDF file, a mini menu will automatically popup. The menu will have Highlight and Add comment options in addition to the regular Copy option to copy text quickly. To invoke the menu with mouse, you can drag and select any text with the mouse and a smaller version of the menu will appear upon completing the selection. You can hover over any of the options in the menu to expand it and click the items to activate as in the regular context menu. To dismiss the menu, you can just click outside of the menu or move pointer away and the menu will fade away.

To invoke the menu with touch, you can select any piece of text with long press or double tap and by adjusting the grippers. The menu will pop up automatically in the expanded state and you can tap on any of the options to activate. To dismiss the menu without selecting any options, you can just tap outside of the menu.

Like the regular context menu, the Highlight option on the menu will also have a sub-menu to pick highlight colors and Add comments option would open a pop up for you to type your comment. Clicking or tapping More actions would open the full context menu with all the options that we have today.

The menu would also work on an existing highlight. Clicking or tapping on any text highlight will open the menu. You can change the color or the highlight or remove it using the Highlight options or add a comment on the highlight using the Add comment option.

Roadmap for PDF reader in Microsoft Edge

Over the course of last year, we worked hard on building a powerful PDF reader that offers compatibility, reliability, and security for you and your organization.

The feedback we received from you from the Edge Insider builds has been really encouraging, and here are some of the most asked features that are available today, across Windows, Mac, and Linux:

Reading and Navigation:

Table of Contents enables you to view the contents of PDF files and navigate to different parts seamlessly, improving your productivity.

Page view enables you to view the PDF file in a book format, with the option to view the cover page separately.

Caret mode lets you navigate through your PDF files and select text directly through your keyboard by enabling Caret mode by pressing F7.

Accessibility support including keyboard accessibility, screen reader support, and capability to view PDFs in high contrast mode.

Fill basic PDF forms directly in the browser. (Please note that XFA forms are currently not supported)

Annotation tools:

Ink on PDF files with colors and stroke width of your choice.

Text notes can be added quickly to text in the file to jot down thoughts for easy reference later.

Create highlights with Highlight mode enables you to draw attention to parts of the PDF that you find interesting. With Highlight mode, you can now create highlights directly by selecting text, as you would do with a highlighter and paper.

In-context annotations opens a quick menu right when you select text on PDF files, enabling you to take quick actions as highlight, copy without losing context.

Enterprise and Education:

Read Aloud is now supported on PDF documents. You can use it either to retain focus while reading through it or to listen to PDF documents while multitasking!

Dictionary and search through in-context menu keeps helps you understand the content and research better, while keeping you in context.

Open Microsoft Information Protection (MIP) and Information Rights Management (IRM) protected PDFs and view permissions seamlessly within Microsoft Edge, without the need of any add-ins. MIP adds a layer of security to your documents. It ensures that only the users who have certain permissions such as view, copy, annotate can take those actions on the file. Hence, no matter where the document goes, the data of your organization remains secure.

Certificate based Digital Signatures, which is currently under preview allows you to view and validate digital signatures present on PDF documents directly in the browser.

Here are the features we’re currently working on:

View recovery: On re-opening a PDF file, reach your last-read location easily.

Viewing MIP files protected in other tenants: This will enable you to view the files protected in other organizations, or in other tenants in the organization.

Validate Certificate based Digital Signatures: We’re currently working on adding support for signatures with long-term validity.

Further down the line:

File preview of PDF files in File Explorer and Outlook

Support for adding text boxes for form filling

Viewing labels of protected files

Digital Signatures:

Validating ETSI signatures

Add Digital Signatures

Accessibility improvements: Advanced capability to fill forms and navigate through a PDF document using screen readers.

Stop PDFs Web links from displaying inside Microsoft Edge

In order to disable Microsoft Edge's PDF feature, you need to change the file association
of PDF files, which you can do with the following steps:

Open PC Settings.

Click on Apps.

Click on Default apps.

Click Choose default apps by file type.

Scroll down and find .pdf and click the button on the right side, which is likely to read "Microsoft Edge".

Select your app from the list to set it as the new default.

Click the Switch anyway link to confirm the change.
