Today we joined Steelcase in New York to share our vision for empowering teams and unveiled new details about the Surface Hub 2S product line, introducing the new 85-inch screen size and bringing unprecedented, battery-enabled mobility to the 50-inch collaboration device.

Our best ideas come from when we’re working as a team – focused, engaged, connected. When Surface started, we were a team of 12 all working together in a secret lab in Redmond. Collaboration was a constant and it was simple – at least in terms of location. Today, we’re a team spread across the globe, working closely with groups across Microsoft not just to build devices, but to create connected and complete experiences.

Surface Hub 2S is a product built to engage and empower teams by bridging digital and physical workspaces, because how we work continues to evolve every day. Not so long ago, the emphasis was on individual productivity. Today that’s changed – the situations we face at work are more complex and solving them requires a variety of skillsets and knowledge.
It’s why people are spending more time than ever before collaborating, and why companies are embracing new ways of working together. People see teamwork as critical to their job, but teams are more global and mobile than ever and being in the same room often isn’t possible. Businesses are looking to technology to close the gap – not only across departments, buildings and time zones, but also to connect different work styles and perspectives.

At Microsoft, we’ve been working on this – empowering people to achieve more, together. We’ve evolved Office into a collaborative suite that lets you work together in real-time from any device. We’ve introduced Microsoft Teams to create one, secure place for teams to access all the tools they need to do their work and added new innovations and enhanced AI to Microsoft Whiteboard. We’ve expanded our Surface family of devices to include not just devices designed for individuals, but also devices purpose-built for teamwork.

Today, we’re excited to share more about how we’re driving the category forward with Surface Hub 2S.

Surface Hub 2S – an all-in-one device built for teamwork

Surface Hub 2S harnesses the full power of Microsoft – Windows 10, Microsoft Teams, Office 365, Microsoft Whiteboard and the intelligent cloud – to unlock the productivity of your team. This new device packs even more performance into a thinner, lighter more versatile design. Forty percent lighter than its predecessor, and with a 60 percent thinner display, Surface Hub 2S fits easily into any space – from a traditional conference room to a compact huddle space. The vibrant 4K+ 50-inch multi-touch display offers an inviting canvas to co-create with the best pen and touch experience and the highest resolution compared to any device in its class. Plus, Surface Hub 2S offers 50 percent faster graphics performance than the original Surface Hub. Surface Hub 2S will start shipping in the U.S.* in June and will be priced at $8,999.99. Surface Hub 2S will be available in the additional Surface Hub markets shortly thereafter.

Teamwork anywhere

Surface Hub 2S gives teams the flexibility to come together wherever they work best. It takes something that has long been a fixture in the conference room – the shared screen – and transforms it into a mobile computer, built for teams. Surface Hub 2S offers the thinnest edge and smallest bezels in its class, bringing you closer to your content and your team and integrating seamlessly into any office environment. When paired with the Steelcase Roam Mobile Stand and APC Charge Mobile Battery, Surface Hub 2S creates a mobile collaboration experience that frees teams from the conference room and allows your ideas to be as mobile as you are – no AC power connectivity required.

Bring remote teams together

Joining a meeting remotely can be painful. It can be hard to stay engaged when you can’t see the people in the room and the content being shared at the same time. Surface Hub 2S helps make meetings more engaging and inclusive of people working remotely. With built-in Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business integration, you can start meetings instantly with one touch. The large true-to-life screen, enhanced 4K camera, crystal clear speakers and far-field mic arrays help everyone on the team – local or remote – see and engage with the meeting content and each other, making it feel almost like everyone is in the same room together.

Stay in the team flow

Too often, great ideas get stuck on the conference room whiteboard and the team’s flow gets broken when the meeting ends. Surface Hub 2S enables teams work digitally all the way through their creative process, with access to the tools they rely on. Easily sign into your Office 365 account to access and interact with the content you need, run must-have Microsoft and business applications natively, and interact naturally with Surface Hub 2 Pen and touch. The Microsoft Whiteboard allows people to collaborate on a shared digital canvas from almost any device so it’s easy to pick up where you left off, keeping teams in their flow.

New options to meet a variety of business needs

We know that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to collaboration. Businesses require choice, flexibility and control over the productivity tools that help enable teamwork. Over the last several months, we have been listening closely to our customers to deliver tailored options to meet a variety of emerging needs. This includes delivering Surface Hub 2S now, with a modular hardware design that will enable customers to unlock new experiences in the future.

Later this year, we will also offer Surface Hub 2 Display, for spaces that need a great pen and touch enabled interactive display, without the compute, as well as a new configuration option for Surface Hub 2S customers to run Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise on their device(s) for specialized app scenarios. We’re also excited to announce that we’re adding an 85-inch version to the Surface Hub family. We will begin testing Surface Hub 2S 85-inch with select customers in early 2020.

We’ve been inspired by how our customers use Surface Hub to transform meetings and collaborate. And we can’t wait to see how businesses across the globe will use Surface Hub 2S to empower their teams to work together in new ways.

Introducing Microsoft Surface Hub

One of the new pieces of hardware unveiled by Microsoft at its Windows 10 event on Wednesday was its Surface Hub, a TV workspace with pen input. And while the company has already started promoting its functionalities, we’re just starting to learn what the device features under the hood.

Microsoft designed two Surface Hub models: a 55- and 84-inch version, both of which are supposed to enhance a team’s ability to communicate, collaborate and share their ideas. Microsoft showed off how the device works on stage,but here are some of the tech specs:

55-inch display at 1080p or 84-inch at 4K

Displays locked at 120 HZ for no-lag writing

Optically bounded displays for extra clarity (as on the Surface Pro)

Supports up to 100 simultaneous touch points

Supports up to 3 pens simultaneously

Powered by Intel Core CPUs

2 x 1080p cameras and a mic array

HDMI, Miracast, NFC, Bluetooth, USB ports

Powered by a lightweight version of Windows 10

Of course, this isn’t the full list of specs and features, as Microsoft hasn’t shared the final details about Surface Hub. We expect to see a few more differences between the two versions of the device before it finally reaches market.

Introducing new A Surface Hub Tour app

We are introducing A Surface Hub Tour, a fun and engaging app optimized for Surface Hub now available from the Windows Store. The A Surface Hub Tour app is an easy-to-follow app to familiarize yourself with the Surface Hub's features and how you can get the most out of them through a hands-on, step-by-step, fun experience. We've named it A Surface Hub Tour to ensure that it sits right at the top of your Surface Hub's app list, easy to find and launch for both you and your users. Make it available for your users to open and explore to enable them to quickly and easily learn how their Surface Hub does much more than just providing a large screen for projection and presentations.

Surface Hub is an all-in-one collaboration device built with integrated features that make not just presenting, but sharing, collaborating and brainstorming easy, secure, and productive. A Surface Hub Tour demonstrates these capabilities in a game-like format that can be explored at your own pace, demonstrating how to get the most from Surface Hub's most compelling features, like Whiteboard, Skype for Business, Office 365, Connect, and of course, several options to give us feedback to improve.

Configure one of the new amazing wallpapers included with the app and selectable from your Surface Hub settings to direct your users to the A Surface Hub Tour learning experience, presenting them with an invitation Come and Explore the Surface Hub by launching the app. Once in the app, you'll be prompted to choose an avatar, and then select from a list of lessons, or worlds. You can follow the recommended sequence, or explore the worlds at your own pace and in your own order. You can also sign-in to save your avatar, prizes, progress and your favorite features. In each world your avatar will participate and guide you in short exercises that demonstrate the Surface Hub's capabilities. At the completion of each world, your avatar will earn a surprise to celebrate!

Leveraging our core strengths in productivity from our Office and Skype divisions, we set out to create a new Windows 10 experience that would re-imagine meetings and help groups of people be more productive together. We’ve created the world’s first team device – a simple, intuitive Windows interface designed for groups, with ink and touch at its core.

Microsoft Surface Hub provides workers a complete device that includes the best digital tools to brainstorm and create together. The OneNote-based Whiteboard tool feels as natural to write on as traditional whiteboard. But it also lets you bring rich, multimedia data into the conversation, makes it easy to share work and ideas when the meeting is over and lets you quickly start where you left off in future conversations.

It’s engineered to be inviting and engaging, making meetings more productive. Built in sensors help the device to wake up when you’re near and track your movement so cameras can follow you. Meetings start instantly with a single touch. Meeting participants can share content wirelessly from Miracast capable devices, making meetings engaging and productive. By removing the points of friction throughout the meeting process, the process of starting and ending meetings, sharing content and collaborating as a remote participant is simple and natural.

And with Windows 10, Surface Hub provides a platform to build amazing large-screen apps for group productivity. Microsoft productivity apps like Office and Skype for Business are built in. And with native support for touch, ink and sensors, the hardware will also enable third party developers to develop beautiful, powerful, immersive applications that light up on the big screen and enable groups to be productive together.

With advanced technology for the modern workplace, and the flexibility to turn any room into a collaboration space, Surface Hub integrates beautifully into the modern workplace, enabling productivity in any kind of space where people come together to get things done, from large conference rooms to informal huddle spaces. The interface is simple and consistent from room to room, making it easy for anyone to walk up and start using, even if they are visiting from another office or another company.

The integrated design means it’s as easy to deploy as it is to use. You only need to plug in power, connect to Wi-Fi and you’re up and running. And carts and stands will make it easy to move from room to room.

A Canvas as Big as Your Imagination

When Surface Hub’s 84-inch 4k display comes alive, you’ll notice instantly that this is unlike any touch display you’ve ever experienced. We’ve designed it from the ground up to offer a large-format pen and touch experience that is unsurpassed by any other device available today. The display and touch sensor are phase locked at 120Hz – so the display refreshes every 8.33 milliseconds.

By effectively doubling the frame rate on the touch panel, and doubling the frame rate on the display, we’re cutting latency in half. What that means is there is virtually no lag – the display is literally refreshing faster than the human eye can perceive. It feels and appears as responsive as its analog counterparts – but is instantly more productive.

The hardware is also designed to completely transform meeting experiences for remote participants. Fourth Generation Intel i5 and i7 processors power the experience so apps and video are smooth and responsive. Full 1080p cameras on each side with wide field of view help ensure those joining from afar will benefit from a view of virtually the entire room. The built-in mic array leverages technology from Xbox Kinect to detect and follow voices in the room while eliminating background noise.
