  1. Invisible Boot Manager on Multi OS system.

    i7-5820k, 3.3GHz
    Asus X-99A/USB 3.1 mobo
    16gigs Ram
    AMD RX480 8gig
    Win 10/7

I am dual booting win 10 and 7. The install of 10 went smooth and I had the wonderful blue menu screen for some time.
    Attachment 164426

However, since the Creators update on 10 all I have for the boot manager is a black screen. I can still navigate said screen as if the manager options are still there, which is why I haven't really attempted to fix it since initially having the issue. Today the Restart I initiated hung so I ended up hitting my power button to kill it and boot it back up. Everything was normal until it got to the boot manager screen which was back in its blueness, but the menu was on the left screen as if my desktop was in an Eyefinity group (after booting it was and I didn't set that). Set it back to standard multiscreen non-Eyefinity and restarted afterwards and it was back to black again.

Reinstallation is out of the question.

    :)

Cumulative Update KB3194798 failing to install

Looked at your link.. Sadly none of the repairs there were associated to my system at all. I am on a HP Laptop, which I have made the HD a multi-boot (Yes this was a challenge and a chore to get to work right).

OS : MANJARO LINUX (Arch linux base)

    OS : Windows 10

    OS : Windows 7

    OS : Windows XP

    OS : Kali Linux

(Yes, overkill .. I'm a geek.. go figure)

Bootloader : Grub 2.02 (linux based bootloader)

And here is what I think is happening, that the windows update is trying to modify the boot sector, or something associated to it, but because I am on the multi-boot using Grub Bootloader, it can not find what it is looking for, and fails.

    SOLUTION - FOUND !!

Ok, when doing multi-boots it often changes the 'ACTIVE PARTITION'

Suggested to you all to try !

Step 1: Right Click on windows icon (bottom left on your taskbar) should open a menu

Step 2: Select Disk Management in the menu

Step 3: In the Disk Management window, right click on your Windows Drive (usually defaulted to C: )

    - Can be done in either half, upper or lower

Step 4: In the new menu that opens 'Mark Partition as Active' is what you select

Then Attempt the Update. (This resolved the issue for me, please mark as HELPFUL if it works for you!)

  3. How do I get to the windows boot manager screen?

Hi Nancie. I'm Greg, a volunteer installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

It's managed on the boot tab in System Configuration (msconfig) accessed by typing that in Start Search.

Do you have a Multi Boot PC? For a multi-boot to have a fuller range of choices to manage the Boot Menu use EasyBCD:
    http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBCD/EasyBCD+B...

If you'll tell us a bit more about what you need, we can help you better.

Invisible Boot Manager on Multi OS system.

In Windows 10, in a Command Prompt (Admin) - and I think Powershell (Admin) will work also, run:

    bcdboot E:\Windows
    bcdedit /set {default} description "Windows 7"
    bcdboot C:\Windows
    bcdedit /set {default} description "Windows 10"

The path in red is to your Windows 7 installation. It will be \Windows, but the drive letter might be different.
The path in green is to your Windows 10 installation, which should be C:\Windows.

  5. Thanks for responding. Doesn't that just add Win10/7 to the menu though? The menu is still accessible with both options. I just can't see it.

Bcdboot not only adds the entries to the boot menu for the OS, but it also updates the binaries from that OS. So bcdboot adding Windows 10 is what gives you back the graphical boot menu.

The bcdedit edit commands just rename the boot menu entries.

It is a no go. Each command completed successfully, but on reboot it was still black and invisible.

Invisible Boot Manager on Multi OS system.

    I would try:

    bcdboot C:\Windows /s F: /f ALL

    Hi,

Nope, that will create a Bios and UEFI boot record for drive letter F:\ .
From what I gather of what TS states he has a graphics resolution problem making the boot menu screen look all black. Or does he mean it's black and white and he wants the blue screen back ?
If so, that can be fixed but I'll await his response.

    Cheers, *Wink

Respectfully, no it won't. It will create a boot record for C:\Windows on the BCD store which is currently located on his F: drive.

the /s F: switch only tells the system on which drive to create the boot files.
