Windows 10: IrDA driver / stack support in Windows 11

Hearing from colleagues that Windows 11 will not have continuous support for IrDA from Windows 11. Could this be confirmed ? And also advise the alternate path to use those IrDA infrared devices with Windows 11 or later releases ? Do we have support to have back compatibility settings to enable the same access on IrDA as it is in Windows 10 after anniversary release ? I am sure multiple customers will have the similar issue and reaching out MS for support. Appreciate the quick response on it. Thanks,Atheeq

Does Windows 11 have irDA support?

I use a device that connects by infra-red to my Windows computer using irDA. I initially had problems when I upgraded to Windows 10 because the support for an irDA stack had been removed by Microsoft. I didn't discover this until after I had upgraded.

I was no longer able to connect my device (a Scubapro Galileo Luna dive computer). There were many other devices affected by this as you will see if you search on irDA under Windows. The problem was resolved some months later when irDA support was added to a later release of Windows 10.

I have been offered the Windows 11 upgrade but have declined as I need to be sure that irDA is supported. I must be able to use my USB to irDA dongle to connect my dive computer. I don't want to repeat the experience I had with the Windows 10 upgrade.

Because #1 this is a simple Yes/No question which remains unanswered after 8 days, and because #2 the reason the irDA stack was quietly removed (between the final evaluation version of Win10 and the first full distribution version) was that irDA communication was very old technology (almost as old as the keyboard) and therefore obviously obsolete, I think we have to assume it will not be implemented in Windows 11. If keyboard support is not implemented either (for the same reason), that could be the other reason for a lack of a quick response, as the telepathic link driver has apparently hit some kind of snag.

If you are comfortable using your Luna, your ScubaPro tank transmitter is working and you are not sufficiently tempted by the clearer display of a Perdix, stay with Windows 10. The Galileo Luna and Sol are really reliable, which has not been my experience with their successor. Unfortunately, Linux distros also dropped irDA support quite a few years ago now, and you have to be pretty smart to be able to reinstate it, although I understand it is still possible.

 

Windows 10 IRDA stack

I have a new computer with Windows 10 version 1903. Problem I am running into is an Infra Red USB adapter. I am a diver and my dive computer uses an IR port to transfer data back and forth to my PC. The USB IR adapter I use works fine on XP and Win
7 but not on Win 10. I have read that MS deleted with IRDA stack in Win 10 (for what reason, I haven't heard). Supposedly Win 10 version 1511 replaced the IRDA stack but support for that version has long since expired. I have just read where there will
be no Windows 11 and Windows 10 will simply be updated regularly. Are there any plans to include the IRDA stack in future versions of Win 10? As it stands, my Win 10 computer is useless in regards to my dive data.
