    Ah... this confused me
Sorry there's not more. He wants 7 to replace it.
    and then
Seven running for several days with no issues yet.

Try turning off Secure boot, then the System Restore or Macrium (what are the images - Win8 ... Win10?)

Win10 is locked down a bit, even SFC has trouble (a few hundred files [~800 a lot are language and font related] cannot be decompressed).

Speccy, which accesses system information, fails to load dlls. It runs fine on Win8 and Win10 is basically 8.1 update 2.

I'm not fully up to speed on GPT or UEFI, but there are mentions re: GPT about moving disks. Data disks are ok, system disks are tied to the machine they were created on. How does this apply? I'm not sure, but I think it might depend on how the process is initiated (from inside Windows or external boot).

Don't quote me on that ... I really need to understand these things better.

  3. I won't be installing it for any other enthusiasts except in Dual Boot. But there was no point in dual booting 8 because he didn't want it. So yes I should have insisted on 7. This is his secondary PC.

Most modern hardware now has Secure Boot so it would be good to know if 8 users with it have kept it enabled when dualing 10.

Bill it was 10 image made from installed Macrium using PE disk to attempt Recovery. Could have been burn. I'll try one on my 10 test partition.

  4. Irreparable crash

    Thanks Greg,

My hardware isn't all that modern - and HP BIOS limits user changes to bare minimum. Hence no Secure Boot on any of my machines.

I'm still curious: if Secure Boot is disabled in the firmware before recovery is attempted, would that change your results?

Please post what your test shows re: the burn.
