Windows 10: Is a file fragmentation happening on my laptop?

Seven months prior, I took the initiative to alleviate the storage strain on my device by transferring all my photos onto an external hard drive. This action successfully boosted the available free space to a commendable 20 GB gigabytes. However, as time goes on, the current state of affairs presents a less-than-satisfactory scenario, as the available space has dwindled to a mere 12 GB.Are there any possible explanations behind this cause? And, are there any solutions?

Set minimum and maximum to a constant number as suggested by others, that will help reduce fragmentation on the drive coz of different page file sizing.

The above issue might occur due to corrupt files, folders, or bad sectors or if programs running in the background is accessing the hard drive on the computer.



Close all the program that is currently running on the computer and optimize the drive to check if the issue is resolved.



To close the programs currently running on the computer, follow the steps below:

• 
  Right click on the taskbar and select
  Task Manager from the context menu.
  
• 
  Click on the program and select
  End task on the window.
  
• 
  Close after all the programs are closed and run disk fragment to check if the changes are effective.
