  2. Windows 10 UPGRADE - Not Enough Room on C: Drive

Error received: "Disk space: You'll need to free up some disk space on your PC (8GB required).

The problem is, 28.4 GB of 29.1 GB of my C: drive is already used.

Of that, 20.4 GB is "System & Reserved" ... only 5.98 GB is "Apps & Games."

    2.92 GB is "Other."

I have roughly 3 TB free space on two (2) separate external hard drives.

Is there any way to perform this Windows 10 UPGRADE utilizing my external hard drives?

Mystified by details in disk management

    Hi

That makes sense although I don't understand why the 20.4 Gb recovery partition shows up as an unallocated partition on Drive C (no Drive letter) whereas it appears in other software (Perfect Disc) as drive D. However, that may not be problematical. Drive
letter D is certainly not available to use for occasionally connected external devices.

My Notebook came as pre-installed and ready to use with a label to that effect stuck on the box covering part of the label which suggested that it had the Windows 10 OS but it just might not be the case and it might have had Windows 8 with the necessary
installations to upgrade it to Windows 10. I cannot see any indication of that being the case but it may be normal after a Windows 10 Upgrade.

    Thanks for your input.

It's hard to say not knowing how large the C:\Windows Folder was before the update.

  5. I have just checked mine following the update last week and the "windows.old" is just short of 19GB in size *Smile

I have also been told by a few people that this will auto delete after about 10 days *Smile Will soon find out this time next week...

You can force it by using Disk cleanup > Clean system files.

They promised 10 days as opposed to 30 before but I have seen them sitting there for year or more.

The original 10240 upgrade a year ago never got round to deleting its windows.old, I had to clean it up manually. For 1511 I couldn't be bothered to wait, used disk cleanup. This time I waited to see - 10 days after my AU upgrade (to the minute) it was all automatically removed.

20.4 GB is not an unheard-of size for a Windows.old folder. I write about this stuff, so I usually check mine on a variety of systems. I've seen them as small as 9 or 10 GB and as large as 20-25 GB across the various systems upon which I've run Windows 10 since October of 2014 when the Technical Preview first became generally available. This is on the high side, but that probably reflects a Windows install with numerous installed applications (which also add to the image size).
