  1. Is it not possible to share individual sub-folder under \Users?

I wanted to share a \Users sub-folder e.g. "\Users\itsme\stuff" with other network PC's. If I set sharing on for that sub-folder the entire \Users folder is shared. There is no problem to share non-Users sub-folders, is \Users a special case?

Win 10 Pro, installed and fully updated today.

Windows 10 file sharing with user permissions using homegroup network on Windows 10.

Me too. This seems to be regardless of the settings in the Control Panel
    Advanced File Sharing
. But from my exploration of the tools, you can make sharing work by folder and sub-folder, but a). it's quite obscure, and b). you have to go through the process separately for every single folder and sub-folder in the structure.
I can't find a setting for subfolders to inherit settings from the parent, and as soon as you select more than one folder in file explorer, the Sharing tab [see below] disappears! Files in a shared folder are available without having to be individually set.

    Method:

    • In File Explorer, right click the folder you want to share
    • Select Properties [NB Don't choose 'Share with' - this doesn't take you anywhere useful]
    • Select the Sharing tab - this will tell you if the folder is already shared. Even if it isn't, for some reason the helpful-looking 'Share . . .' button is always greyed out!
    • Click on the Advanced sharing button which opens a new window
    • Tick the check-box to 'Share this folder'
    • Click OK several times to get back out of the utility windows
Please let us know if there's a way to do this over a branch of sub-folders.

  3. Windows 10 subfolder sharing

I'm trying to access my music through Kodi on my Firestick. My PC runs Windows 10. My music folder contains 600 sub folders (over 10,000 if you include sub folders of the sub folders). All of these folders are on my C: drive.

I can share my music folder or any of the sub folders if I select "properties...sharing...advanced sharing" for that one folder. None of the sub folders become shared. Each sub folder says "not shared". I check the "inheritable permission" box to no apparent
    effect.

I'm in a private network profile: choosing: Turn on network discovery, turn on file and printer sharing, and allow windows to manage homegroup connections. Guest or Public is set the same. All Networks is set to: Turn off public folder sharing (turning
it on has no effect), Enable file sharing for 40 or 56 bit encryption(128bit has no effect on whether a sub folder is shared), allow media streaming to multiple devices(including Firestick), turn off password protected sharing.

I'm not going to initiate "share" 10,000 times. What else can I do to share all these folders?

Do you have public folder sharing turned on? If so, turn it off.

I'm wondering if one has to give access to [account name] folder in order to give access to a [account name] child folder. Thread Starter and I agree: any other nonUser area folder - no problems hsaring. Now, back to account name sub / child folder: I'm wondering if Sharing would be safer if that folder was copied into the data partition, same name is ok. I have my programs being "told" to copy to/move to/save to data partition folders and not to anywhere within User section [folder].
NavyPerson, you're right about tweaking the Network & Sharing Center's tweaks! *Smile

The way that windows sharing works is a two stage process the network sharing controls the sharing of the folder tree and the NTFS permissions control the individual folders and even files.

The setting of the Public folder sharing to on sets both the Network and NTFS file permissions to everyone, of the public folders , so this is a special case.
As has already been stated, turning off public folder sharing should set this back to how it is with the rest of the system.

The normal system still has the network share work on the folder and all its child folders, but does not change the NTFS permissions, therefore you have to set both permissions to fully control the share.

If the other users are administrators, who can change permissions "on the fly" then you have an issue that may only be controlled by use of the deny permission, which is a very dangerous thing and can result in complete lockout for everyone from that file / folder/ Tree - so sharing should only be controlled for Standard users

Also, when you share a sub-folder which is under a more restricted folder, you have to provide a link directly to the sub-folder, because a user not authorized for the parent folder won't be able to navigate through it to get to the sub-folder.

So, I create a folder called "Sharing", with permissions for only myself to access locally or over the network. Below that I create folders for "User1", "User2", etc. The user folders have permissions for only myself and that particular user to access both locally or over the network. I can't give a generic link to the "Sharing" folder to any of the users because they won't be able to navigate through it to get to their own user folder because while they have permission and access to User1 folder they don't have permission or access to the Sharing folder. I have to give a link that goes directly into the user folder to User1 such as \\Computer\Sharing\User1, etc.

  8. Is it not possible to share individual sub-folder under \Users?

Public Sharing is OFF, and has never been on.

My usual share would be a folder or sub-folder set up for that purpose as the LCDR suggests. I was surprised to see the unintended result of sharing a sub-folder under C:\Users and wanted to know if there is a way to avoid sharing the whole folder.

I have confirmed this is definitely a change from W7.

I was able to do what you want by unsharing Users and then sharing the individual folder, e.g. Stuff
Select Network on your computer (the one that needs Users unshared), then select the same computer from list, Right click on the Users folder and select properties.
Select Sharing and then advanced sharing. Uncheck Share this folder. Select OK. You may get a message afterward regarding find folder, just select ignor.
Then go to the folder you want to share and select Sharing and add Everyone (or whomever) to the shared list. Use the advanced sharing option or it will re-share Users.

  11. Yes! That appears to be the key *Smile Have to use Properties/Sharing/Adv. Sharing/ and not the "Share With" option.

    Thank you!
