Is it OK to connect a drive that came from one computer to another computer via USB and...

Does anyone know if this is safe to do:1. I take a Western Digital 1TB HDD from a Dell Latitude D630 out of its drive bay2. I put it in an external drive enclosure3. I connect the enclosure to an HP Elitebook 8440p4. I open the G:/Users/Admin folder on the HP Elitebook 8440p and it requires permissions, I click yes4. I transfer photos from G:/Users/Admin/Pictures on the Western Digtal 1TB HDD to the HP Elitebook 8440p5. I put the Western DIgital 1TB HDD back in the Dell Latitude D6306. I boot up the Dell Latitude D630Is it safe? Will the D630 have any problems booting?

    :)

    computer not recognizing usb drive

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that you are unable to use USB drive on your computer. I’ll certainly assist you with this.

    However, please let us know:

    • Do you receive any error when connecting a USB drive?
    • Does this issue occur only with one particular USB or with all the USB drives?
    • Are you aware of any changes made to the computer prior to this issue?
    • Which build version of Windows 10 is installed on the computer? To check type
winver in the search bar on the Taskbar and hit
      Enter.
    • What is the make and model of the computer?

Meanwhile, I would suggest you to refer the troubleshooting steps mentioned in the article

    Error: “USB Device not recognized”
except for Method 1 and 2.

Let us know how it goes.

    Regards,

  3. Unable to connect to computer from Tablet but OK the other way

I have this new problem I discovered today. I wanted to transfer a file from my computer #4 to my Windows tablet. Although the tablet lists Computer #4 under Network , it can't connect to it . Error code in details is 0X80070035 . What I find strange is that my other computers #2 and #3 have no problem connecting to #4 , just the tablet. It used to connect previously.

However I have no problem connecting from my computer #4 to my tablet . So I temporarily side step the issue by copying the target file to my tablet using computer#4 instead of using the Tablet.

Why can't Tablet connect to Computer #4 but OK the other way ?

BTW Computer #4 and the tablet are recently upgraded to WIN10 , the other computers still on Win7 but I dont think this matters.

Please advise how to tackle this problem . Thanks

My USB Backup drive does not show in My Computer window.

    Hi Meran,

A few possible reason can cause your external drive to not show in File Explorer. To diagnose and fix this issue, we suggest that you check the Disk Management window. To open it, follow the steps below:

    • Right-click on the Start button.
    • Select Disk Management.
    • Alternatively, you can search diskmgmt.msc in Cortana.

Examine the list of drives in the Disk Management window and look for your external drive. Even if it doesn’t show up in File Explorer, it should appear here. If the drive appears, it may not be appearing in File Explorer because it needs to be assigned
a drive letter. To do this, right-click the partition on the drive in Disk Management and select
    Change Drive Letter and Paths.

If you don’t see the drive in the Disk Management window at all, we suggest that you try connecting the drive to a different USB port or use a different USB cable. We also recommend that you avoid using USB hubs, and connect the drive directly to your computer.

If you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to post a reply.
