Windows 10: Is it possible to remove the latest LCU via DISM. Microsoft says so but no one on this...

This info. is on the Update History area in Settings: "If you want to remove the LCUTo remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. Remove LCU -- Instructions

For the word 'remove' in Microsoft's instructions below read 'uninstall'. These instructions are for uninstalling (removing) the Latest Cumulative Update (LCU), not for deleting the contents of the LCU folder.

I'm reading that as "uninstall the Latest Cumulative Update" but leave Servicing Stack Update installed. So that's not the same as deleting the contents of the LCU folder which would still leave the Latest Cumulative Update installed.

 

Removal of LCU to create storage space.

StartComponentCleanup not only cleans up the old WU files, but also removes references to the superseded updates from the registry (i.e., the COMPONENTS registry hive and perhaps the Components Based Servicing registry keys). So, it can't be equated to merely deleting the LCU folder. DISM StartComponentCleanup is the proper method to do that. It can clean up old updates in the LCU folder as well.

Edit: Cleaning up the Servicing\LCU\<KBupdate> folder is one of the tasks performed during 'StartComponentCleanup'. Its main task is cleaning up the WinSxS folder (and the COMPONENTS hive) by removing the superseded updates.
