Hi!Let's consider a following scenario:1. A backup is first taken by creating a system restore point with instructions below. Computer at the time of creating the restore point does not have all Windows-updates included in the latest ISO available from Microsoft so its current build number shown by command "winver" is older than what would appear with a fresh installation from the latest ISO. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-a-system-restore-point-77e02e2a-3298-c869-9974-ef5658ea3be92. 2. Is it possible to restore Windows 10 with a restore point taken from earlier build over fresh installation with newer build

    Hi!

    Let's consider a following scenario:

    1. A backup is first taken by creating a system restore point with instructions below. Computer at the time of creating the restore point does not have all Windows-updates included in the latest ISO available from Microsoft so its current build number shown by command "winver" is older than what would appear with a fresh installation from the latest ISO.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-a-system-restore-point-77e02e2a-3298-c869-9974-ef5658ea3be9

    2. Windows 10 is freshly installed from the latest ISO available from Microsoft so after installation the build number checked with "winver" increases compared to step 1.

    3. Something is not working like it was working with the earlier build from step 1 when the restore point was created.

    My actual question:

Would it be possible to recover the earlier Windows 10 build from step 1 restore point after Windows 10 was freshly installed and then the build number would supposedly decrease back to the build at the time of creating the restore point?

Or would it be only possible to use the restore point in a scenario where Windows updates were downloaded, something was not working anymore and then restore earlier build without doing fresh installation (so that basically the exact same installation still exists on hard drive but some updates just caused problems)?

I do not currently have an active scenario requiring restoring but for possible future needs thinking would it be possible to recover this way with a restore point from earlier build if a fresh installation from the latest ISO more up to date would be used to do a fresh install.

  3. Is it possible to restore Windows 10 with a restore point taken from earlier build over fresh installation with newer build

Sorry! I think I actually confused restore point and system backup here.

What I actually meant was the functionality of Control Panel -> Backup and Restore -> Create a system image.

So what about that instead? Would it be possible to recover that kind of image taken from the older build, doing a fresh installation to update (which is also newer build compared to previous) and then restore the image from older build if something would be wrong for some reason after the fresh installation?

Typically of course a PC is most likely up to date with latest Windows updates at least in home usage but this kind of scenario could be faced for example if a computer is not connected to a public network and update at some point would be preferred to be done with a fresh installation instead of connecting it to public network to download updates. But then if (with some bad luck) something would be wrong with the latest installation the previous image would like to be restored.

    As an example:

    1. Windows has been previously installed with Win10_22H2_English_x64.iso but has not been connected to a public network to download updates in some laboratory after the installation so its build number is the exact same compared to installation time from that iso-file.

    2. Control Panel -> Backup and Restore -> Create a system image is used to create a system backup before doing step 3 fresh installation.
That image is saved to an external hard drive.

    3. Windows is updated as a fresh installation with the latest iso available at the time of writing Win10_22H2_English_x64v1.iso from a bootable USB-stick so build number increases after the installation when compared to step 1.

    4. Not automatic but possible worst scenario: After some time of usage and maybe installing some programs something is noticed to be wrong with the latest installation so step 2 image would like to be restored.

Expectation: Older Windows 10 build from step 2 is restored over step 3 newer Windows 10 fresh installation (if this is supposed to work)?
