Is it possible to undo a recovery from a system image to a new drive in Windows 10?

I recently upgraded to a larger but used HD. It was supposed to include a clean bootable installation of windows 10 pro as it was pulled from a working computer but it was more a recovery drive than anything. I wasn’t too upset because I already have the same OS on the drive I’m copying from. I made a system image in windows 10 and recovered it to the new drive. The drive has issues though and I need to return it. I want to return it to the state it was in before I installed it without having to format it and possibly lose the problematic settings. Is that possible?? I looked at undoing syste

  2. System Recovery to a New Drive in Windows 10 using a stored system image.

    Hi,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

From the description, we understand that, using the recovery disk and selecting recovery using the system image, it will not restore and you get error message saying
    original SSD drive is locked.

We suspect that the issue is due to the firmware is not updated. Hence we suggest you to follow the steps and check.

Step 1: Perform clean install of Windows 10.

How to: Do a clean install of Windows 10

Refer the article from the link:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/wiki/insider_wintp-insider_install/how-to-do-a-clean-install-of-windows-10/aef0ae63-2117-41ee-a8ea-4a3181625b08

Step 2: Update the SSD firmware

Every Solid State Drive (SSD) manufacturer pushes out firmware update to address technical issues, bugs, and improve SSD performance.

Step 3: Try to restore from the recovery image and check if the issue persists.

Hope this information helps, Let us know if you need further assistance.

    Windows 10 System Image recovery

    Hi,

A couple of things to check...

Is the new drive Initialized properly... If your system is using UEFI Bios it needs to be Initialized as GPT... If it is Legacy Bios it needs to be Initialized as MBR...

This is not the same as formatting... It is a step that must be done first with a completely blank HDD with no partitions...

There is a possibility that the Recovery process is trying to use the HDD with the image on it as the drive to reload the image to...

You may have better luck if you connect the drive with the System Image by a USB adapter...

Also... did you make the System Repair DVD on the same machine as you are working on ? Recovery Disks sometimes will not function if a different version\build of Windows...
