Is it safe to force dismount on a hidden system partition, to change its format?

When i try to create a system image .. i get the following message "the backup failed .. one of the volumes specified for backup is invalid because either not on a fixed drive, is not formatted NTFS/ReFS, or is read-only. To convert the file system on a
volume from FAT32 to NTFS, at an elevated command prompt type: CONVERT <volumeletter> /FS:NTFS (0x8078011D)"

I found that the hidden system partition (with no letter name, capacity 996 MB) is FTS32 formatted, although the system partition C: is NTFS formatted (i do not know how this happened) .. to execute the CONVERT I had to assign a letter to the partition ..
i used the disk management and gave the partition the letter X: .. I rebooted the machine .. it worked .. at the elevated command prompt I used the command: CONVERT X /FS:NTFS .. i got the following message:

The type of file system is FAT32. Convert cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Convert may run if this volume is dismounted first.

ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N)

My answer was (N) .. I got the following message:

so it cannot convert it now. Would you like to schedule it to be converted the next time the system restarts (Y/N)?

At this point I couldn't make a decision .. worrying that this will corrupt the system drive and force me to reformat the HDD and re-install widows and softwares ..

Is it safe to to change the format of the hidden system disk

Can any one, please, help me to decide and tell me if what I did is the right way to solve the problem .. is it safe to force dismount .. or there is another solution to this problem ..

  3. How to dismount E-SATA drive in W7x64?

Hi all. I've just used E-SATA for the first time, plugged a drive in and copied everything off of it, but how do I safely remove it? It doesn't show in the Safely Remove Hardware menu and there's no option to dismount when I right-click the drive in My Computer.

So, how is it done? Thanks peeps

How to control USB safe to dismount notifications

This topic keeps popping up and I want to share what I know from my two computers and testing.

As of Jan 29, 2019, Windows 10 Pro 1803 my testing provided this information. I wanted to show how to do this without using Registry edits or other IT Administrator methods. I do not know if this will work on Windows 10 Home.

Do we need the safe to dismount notification? Sometimes.

Today, pulling a USB drive from the port may not harm the data but if you use external hard drives it is still a huge risk to pull the drive out without dismounting it. In previous versions of Windows you could easily loose data because it was not written
to the disk until the dismount process was run. Many USB devices now handle the plug pull without dismounting.

Two separate "Settings" panels must be managed to get USB notifications.

    In "Settings" "Focus assist":

"Get all notifications from your apps and contacts." MUST be selected as "Off"

ANY setting other than "Off" will block USB dismount notifications.

CAUTION, if you choose "Automatic rules" "During these times" the top level "Off" will be deselected in the time range selected. That may lead to chaotic behavior if you don't actually use or understand quiet hours. In previous versions of Windows "Focus
assist" was known as "Quiet hours". You may observe that the USB safe to dismount message seems to work sometimes and then does not.

    In "Settings" "Notifications & actions":

    In the "Notifications" section:

The toggle for "Get notifications from apps and other senders" must be ON.

No other toggle in "Notifications" will block the USB dismount message; set them as you prefer.

In the "Get notifications from apps and other senders" section:

None of the toggles need to be selected for USN notifications; set to your preference.

    Happy Trails
