Is it safe to shutdown my laptop everynight? (SSD)

    Greetings,

I've read that shutting down a computer every night could affect the longevity of 'moving' hardware components i.e. HDD, however, would the same apply to a laptop that has an SSD?

    :)

  2. Is it safe to delete a file from C:\Recovery ?

Thank you for the suggestion. I hope it is useful to someone else with a similar problem.

For me, it's not a good idea, since first, it would invalidate my warranty ; second, I don't have the equipment/tools/skills to remove the old SSD, clone it to a new, bigger SSD, or install the new SSD.

The reason I am asking the question is that I would like to update to the latest build (Anniversary Update) and my SSD does not have 16GB free so I can't install it.

  3. Is it safe to delete a file from C:\Recovery ?

As far as I can tell from the 'Hardware Maintenance Manual' downloaded from Lenovo there is no SSD, it is only eMMC for storage. And there is no mention of any place for an SSD to be fitted either in this manual or in the User Guide.

I've heard the same, and technically speaking, it is true that the longevity of the drive will be affected and have parts of it that get written to get damaged... yet it is very minimal damage. Also it will take a long time until parts of the SSD drive to get damaged. I wouldn't really worry about it that much, yet as a rule of thumb safety pre-caution, just back up your important data from the SSD drive every few months or so.

My setup is that I save all personal files (music, documents, videos, etc..) on a separate drive. If you have a separate SSD drive, all your files should practically be safe, since you're not really writing information that much on them. The main SSD is where the Windows operating system is, and that's where the majority of files are getting written to.

  6. I leave my desktop on at all times. But I have the power plan configured to turn off the D: drive after 45 minutes idle time. No worries.

My wife turns her laptop off every night. No worries.

Do as you please. It makes no difference.

I shut off my Macbook Air and shut down the Desktop in our Home Office, when we are not using them. I will say that there are idiots that think that they know about networks and computers that work in the Government Sector. Only ones that think that a WUS cannot wake up machines or have them check for updates from the WUS, along with not understanding how Windows key + D works.

The only units on my network that are up 24/7, is our NAS and the backup drive.

Any fireman would advise turning off all unneeded electrical appliances to avoid an unnecessary fire risk. It's definitely safer to turn off your PC when not needed plus you are being kinder to the planet by not wasting electricity,
