Windows 10: Is Microsoft trying to lock out 3rd party software

Locked out of 3rd party browsers

I think you are misunderstanding my problem, although i have fixed it by now. There was no parent account in the famil. Just a child account. Therefore there was nobody other then me in the family.

1. Go to your parent Microsoft Account.

2. Click on Family.

3. Under child's account, select "Allow Google app".

I am not a Windows fan boy. In fact, I have no qualm if I have to switch to Android..... today.
However, let's be fair.
Microsoft has no obligation to make its operating systems, Windows 10 in this case, compatible with 3rd party programs.
It is incumbent upon the 3rd party manufacturers to make sure their products are compatible with Windows 10, IF they want their products to be used by Windows 10 owners.

The excerpt says MS is "partnering" with Kaspersky to solve the problem.
What else do we expect MS to do ?

 

The problem became well-known to me not too long ago: My MS Office 2016 lost lots of functionality as long as any 3rd party firewall, anti-virus, anti-malware programs were detected. If only Windows Firewall and MSE and WD was running - Office 2016 worked just fine.

 

All they can do is work to solve the problems. What else do you expect them to do - give out free coffee and donuts ??

 

This does not seem even remotely like Microsoft is trying to lock out third party software. In fact quite the opposite. It is the responsibility of the software supplier to make their software compatible with the OS. Writing devoice drivers is difficult and at the present time Kaspersky is having problems doing so. To make Kaspersky products compatible with Windows 10 Microsoft is providing them extra support. They have no responsibility to do this. Until the software is fully compatible with Windows 10 Microsoft does not recommend these products. This is the responsible thing to do.

Microsoft could not possibly provide even a small percentage of the software users require. No one knows this better than Microsoft. They prefer to concentrate on the OS itself and leave most software to third parties. They do provide some essentials that most people will require, such as AV protection. But the user can opt for third party software if they so choose. This is a good thing and is fully recognized by Microsoft.

 

1. That only indicates there is compatibility issue between Office 2016 and the 3rd party products. That does not mean MS is intentionally trying to block them out.

2. Office 2016 is by Microsoft. Of course MS would make sure it works in Windows OS.

3. There are untold number of Office 2016 users and I do not notice there are threads describing problems as you have mentioned.
Perhaps, the problem is an isolated case to just a few ?

 

I never used any anti-virus software, the built-in Windows defender and firewall seem to be good enough. As the OS evolves, certain software / features will be integrated into the core OS. Whether this is legal or not is dependent on the specific cases. Usually it affects small software companies more than big Microsoft competitors. For example, Microsoft is unlikely to block Google's Chrome.

 

Microsoft is legally very limited in what software it can include with Windows. Starting with Vista as a requirement for sale within the European Union Microsoft created a special N version of Windows that did not include Windows Media Player and similar programs. This wasn't a matter of Microsoft blocking competing products. The mere fact that Microsoft included these programs with Windows was seen as giving them an unfair competitive advantage. This wasn't the first time Microsoft has similar problems. How can a third party sell it's products if Windows supplies it for free?

Aside from the massive legal problems it would create, Microsoft has no desire to block third party software. One of the reasons why Windows is so popular is the huge amount of software available for it, most of it provided by third parties. Third party software is just good for business.

Microsoft has a long history of trying very hard to maintain compatibility with older software, even when the developers broke well documented rules regarding what should not be done. But there is only so much that can be done and much of this software will not run. But don't confuse this with a deliberate attempt to block this software. That is not it at all.

 

Thank you for your replies. I should have mentioned that I am using the latest preview (evaluation) build 14271. Kaspersky worked in earlier builds but not in 14267 nor 14271.

Office 2016 (Home and Business) and Outlook 2016 are working fine.

 

That's an issue that only applies to the latest insider build.

these sorts of discussions come up regularly -- but realistically Ms isn't "The Evil Empire" -- they make a lot of money by all sorts of things most people here probably have never heard of being able to run Windows.

Take typical car acessories -- BMW doesn't for example stop 3rd party stuff - even when it's cheaper and directlly competing with BMW's own stuff. Generally it's a WIN WIN situation.

The only exception is with some of these wretched 3rd party AV software offerings -- those packages were fine when Windows didn't have any decent security system --now it does but these companies still can't believe their time is up.

With the BMW example As before : Nobody has made a better BMW engine than BMW yet -- but BMW still don't have any problems with 3rd party acessories.

People just don't seem to realize that with W10 the security is now built into the OS so for HOME users you don't need any 3rd party AV software -- for other software Ms hasn't a problem. The more diverse equipment that Windows can run on the better for Ms.
