Is my 2TB USB 3.0 external portable drive too slow?

I bought a Seagate Expansion 2 TB USB portable drive. While populating it with data I noticed that the transfer speed was about 31 MB/s on average.

My PC is about 7 years old and has a 2-port USB card in it. The external drive is connected to it via a USB 3.0 hub.

    1. Isn't this speed rather slow?

    2. Is there any (free) software that I could use to test the read/write speed?

    3. In Device Manager under "Disk drives" the portable drive is described as a SCSI device. Is this correct? I have an other USB drive connected to the PC on the other USB port (but not a portable drive) and it's described as a "USB device" in Device Manager.

    :)

  2. WINDOWS 10 MIGRATED ALL OF MY TOSHIIBA EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE TO UNKNOWN LOCATION

Is there a method to reverse a windows 10 migration?

Without any action on my part Windows 10 “migrated” all of my files from my
Toshiba 2TB Canvio® Connect Portable Hard Drive
    3.0 USB (Part Number:
    HDWC120XK3JJ1).

Where did the files migrate to? I need my backup data cannot find the files on my PC!

The PC is a Toshiba Satellite C655d-5200. External Hard drive no longer recognized by Window

wimdowes 10 does not allowed usb plugins to work

Starting not to like w- 10 All of my USB portable drives will not, Like the Seagate 3.0 or SanDisk Cruzer Glide 8gb I solve the problem by opening device manager and up dated the USB external storage now it works perfect.

Is my 2TB USB 3.0 external portable drive too slow?

31 MB/S looks more like USB2 speed. But again speed also depends on file type you are copying. It's best to try with a large media file (ex: movie file) and see the speed. I use a little freeware program called "USB Device Tree Viewer". You can get it from this link.
just run the program and on the right pan look for "bcdUSB". It will tell you if your device is working under USB2 or 3. There are other useful information that will help you troubleshoot.

  6. Having a USB 3.0 hub means nothing if it is plugged into a USB 2.0 port. The entire transfer will go at the slowest speed along the chain.

    1. That would be a typical speed for mixed file sizes. It's not slow.
    2. That speed is very dependent on file size. Large files are considerably faster than a large number of small ones.

You can use a benchmark application but that only tells you the speed of benchmark tests not real use. What they do reveal however is the variation of speed with file size.
SCSI, just forget about that, it appears in my drives which are SATA, it is just a legacy/historical name/spec, like IDE, EIDE, ST506 etc.

Is my 2TB USB 3.0 external portable drive too slow?

The OP has not mentioned if his PC has USB3 support or not. Just a mention of a USB card with 2 ports. If card is USB2 then USB3 interfaces or USB3 Hob makes no difference. You get USB2 connection and speed. Some older pc's and laptops have mixed ports (2X usb2 and 2X USB3). So you need to use the right port. But in this case you should see if the card is a USB3 one or USB2. Today you can buy a USB3 card very cheap. So it's easy to replace it if it's a USB2.

Thank you for your tremendous help!

A few points to clarify: My card I believe is a USB 3 card.
The USB hub on which I connected the 2 TB portable drive is a USB 3 type of hub (with 7 ports on it).
The average speed that I mentioned in my previous posting about this drive was determined when copying all sorts of files ranging from a few Megabytes to the largest one being about 400 GB.

I ran USB Device Tree Viewer and the result that it gave me for the port in question was as follows.

  10. You are connected at USB 3.0.

    @Fortitude,
The result you posted here are similar to what I get from my USB3 HDD and Controller. All seem to be normal. As I said earlier the speed also depends on the filetype, filesize, and folder structure. I have folders with many small files that copy at very slow speed (ex ~2MB/s). But I just copied a big MKV movie from pc to my usb hdd and the speed was 61MB/s average. According to the logs from usb tree viewer your devices are both fine and correctly detected.
Meanwhile it's a good idea to go to your usb card manufacture site and download the latest drivers available for the device.

You're probably getting the max speed, that you will get with this setup. My guess is that if you removed the hard drive from the ext case its in and installed it in your desktop your speed would improve very little. While these large 5400 rpm hard drives internally will benchmark at about 90 GBS in real life they barely get 40 GBS so your getting 30+ GBS in an external case is doing quite well.

Is my 2TB USB 3.0 external portable drive too slow?

    @PolarNettles
I tried the test (1GB) and the result was 90.18 and 93.74 MB/s for Read and Write respectively.

My hard drive is indeed a Toshiba 1TB disk. This is where I keep my data on. My C drive is a Samsung SSD 850 Pro 250 GB (if that is important).

  14. Looks like you're perfectly fine then. Copying a bunch of small files will be slower than copying one giant file like the benchmark does.

Unfortunately I would say that the test is not truly conclusive. I copied about 4GB of files ranging from just below 1 GB each to just over 1 GB, but the speed was slow again.

However, based on testing another portable drive that I have the speed was around 90 MB/s. The difference between the two drives is that the fast one has write caching enabled. I'll enable write caching on the slow drive and see if there's a improvement.

EDIT: I enabled write caching on the device and the speed based on an actual transfer of about 4 GB was 90 MB/s.
