  1. Is the system architecture of Windows 7 similar to Windows 10?

I want to start learning the core, low-level system of Windows. I have found a book that provides exactly what I am looking for, but it covers Windows 7. The newer, updated version of this book that covers Windows 10 will not be released for another 6 months. So my question is: are the low-level structures/internals/kernels for Windows 7 and 10 similar? Because if they are, could I begin reading the current Windows 7 edition without fear of drastic core changes in Windows 10? My goal here is to start learning the basis of the operating system as soon as possible, knowing that there are obvious differences between 7 and 10, and that certain core functionality will have changed in Windows 10. The book that I am referring to is "Windows Internals Parts 1 and 2, 6th edition" (covering Windows 7). The 7th edition which covers Windows 10 will not be released until December 29, 2016. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    :)

  2. Can I install 64bit Windows 10 on a 32bit Windows 7 PRO PC?

    Hello Sam,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. We will assist you in resolving the issue.

The terms 32-bit and 64-bit refer to the way a computer's processor (also called a CPU), handles information. The 64-bit version of Windows handles large amounts of random access memory (RAM) more effectively than a 32-bit system.

An upgrade can be done on a PC running with similar architecture i.e. 64bit - 64 bit or 32bit - 32bit architecture. However, 32bit architecture can be installed on a 64bit architecture running PC but not the other way around.

Refer to the link below on similar issue and check if it helps:

    Thank you.

Alas, some parts are the same, while others are different. That said, those books are quite possibly the best-ever resource on Windows inner workings available anywhere. I've been reading them since the 1st edition came out in the 1990s. Russinovich really knows his stuff!

That being said, you can start with the Windows 7 book and get updates about 10 from the Windows Sysinternals web site before the 10 book comes out.

Windows 10 is a member of the NT platform first relased in 1993. All versions of Windows, both client and server versions (excepting Windows 95, 98, and ME) have been members of the NT family. Over the years the core concepts of the OS haven't changed that much. Certainly many of the details have changed as the OS and the hardware it runs on have matured. and much of what is new in latter versions is in the form of additions.

I would think that older version of the Windows Internals books would be relevant and useful.

  9. Thank you everyone for your responses! As I said in my original post, my goal here is to begin learning the low-level, core functionality of Windows in general. Your suggestions will definitely help me along my journey.

While the core Win32 structure has not changed significantly, most of the details have changed quite a bit. The OS has become far more modular (With Windows Server 2016 they have a version called Nano Server that is pretty tiny). The OS has also been optimized significantly for SSD's, as well reducing memory footprint (along with other technologies like compressed memory).

But the largest change since Windows 7 was the addition of the WinRT subsystem (the part that runs Modern/Universal apps). This is basically an entirely new OS, and assuming the 7th edition covers this it will have a significant amount of new material.
