Is There a 3rd Party Backup App That Also Saves the Hidden Files But Uses File History

Hi Windows Backup friends. File History sadly the hidden files which sometimes have the save files for games won't be included, does anyone know a 3rd-party app or a Command Prompt or Powershell command that will include the hidden files and folders when your use File History to back things up?I plan to reinstall with a fresh install and install the app and download huge apps which could take weeks but it's great to have a fresh install, though it's be nice if a 3rd-party app can also save the hidden files which sometimes have the setting coz' I won't be able to remember all the setting for e

  2. File History vs VSS vs 3rd party backup app for open workstation files

    1. Does Windows 10 File History back up open files, eg. open excel or pdf's or only closed files?
I use a document management app that stores docs in Sql but temporarily copies them to a user\appdata\roaming\ subfolder while the user is working on the file. Then the app is supposed to copy the saved word, excel, or pdf back toSql when user saves and closes the file. Many times the app fails to copy back to Sql and user has to manually do it. But sometimes the file has been deleted. Then you have to hope it's in the recycle bin, or try a third party undelete tool and wait for that to finish searching.

    2. would setting VSS to auto start be a better solution, or does it only store closed files?

    3. What is the interaction of File History and VSS on Win 10 workstation? Does FH take over from VSS? I enabled both FH and VSS on a workstation, started VSS service. But I don't see the configuration choices for VSS.

    4. I might just have to find a low impact 3rd party continuous backup app for workstations, that could backup to my second hd or to my nas. Any suggestions? (I'd have used Crashplan but i think it won't do local backups in latest ver.)

Does File History Also Backup the Hidden Files and Hidden Folders Like AppData?

Hi Microsoft friends, does File History (I think that's the weakest way to repair and recover compared to the many Windows tools to repair and recover- too many though it's confusing but File History is the to easiest use) backup the hidden files and hidden folders in say the Save Data/Safe File of most games from Steam and Epic Games Store? Or it only backups the non-hidden files that are not system files and non-installed apps?

    Thank you.

    God bless you.

Files skipped in Backup using File History

    Hi Sumangal,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

Which device are you backing up the files to?

Normally, on the successful completion of back up, you will get the pop up saying that the backup operation completed successfully and if any file is skipped, you will be notified about it, however some files due to their length appear to be hidden. If
you try to restore the file using File History it is actually there.

I would suggest to check if the files/folders are in the Excluded folder list. You may also want to check the file history logs to view the recent events errors, the option is available under
    Advanced settings of File History.

Finally, I would suggest to restore your personal files and see if the missing files are restored from the file history. Please refer to the following article. The article is for Windows 8, but holds good for Windows 10 as well.

    Restoring files from File History

    Hope the information is helpful.
