  2. Windows Explorer: possible to have folder tree automatically expand?

    This question is regarding Windows Pro 10.0.19043 Build 19043. Windows Explorer has a split navigation window: the left pane shows a tree view of your computer and all of its drives, folders, etc. and the right pane shows a listing of files and folders in the current drive or folder. Is there a way to have the tree on the left automatically (or at least using a shortcut) expand to match the path I am browsing in on the right?

  3. Folder Template with shortcut to folder inside folder.

    I showed you the principle of a method that will do what you wish. To apply it to any folder structure you need to understand how it works.

    • In my shortcut I defined the "Start in" folder as %CD%. This means that the shortcut must use the
      current folder as its base. In my example this was C:\Templates\Template1\TestA.
    • For the shortcut I used this command line:

      explorer.exe ..\TestB\Target

      What exactly does this do? Here is the explanation:

      1. "..\" tells Explorer to step on up in the directory tree:

      C:\Templates\Template1\TestA -> C:\Templates\Template1

      2. "TestB" tells Explorer to steop one down in the directory tree:

      C:\Templates\Template1 -> C:\Templates\Template1\TestB

      3. "Target" tells Explorer to open the file or folder "Target".
    Applying this knowledge, you could create a shortcut that makes Explorer step up two folders:

    Explorer.exe ..\..\Template2\TestB\Target

    C:\Templates\Template1\TestA

    -> C:\Templates\Template1

    -> C:\Templates

    -> C:\Templates\Template2

    -> C:\Templates\Template1\TestB

    -> Open "Target"

    Armed with this knowledge you can now fix your shortcut yourself.

    Fast way to check file shortcuts

    AFAIK there are no tools in Windows or in MS Word to check the validity of embedded links, i.e. to check if the links point at an existing file. You could use a script to perform the task. To make it work you would need to do this:

    • Using notepad.exe, create a script file on your desktop (or in a folder of your choice).
    • Download and save a copy of unzip.exe.
    After doing this you could use your mouse to drag a folder onto the script file and drop it there. It would then check all .docx files in that folder and report any invalid links.

    You now need to decide if doing this is within your reach.
