Is there a way to reduce the amount of space the navigation arrows take up in the windows explorer address bar area? Or can they be moved to a different location? I can't see enough of the file address bar.

Windows 11 Pro 22H2 Explorer Address Bar Drop Down Shows Other Open Tabs

    Bug1:

The address bar and the tool bar below it is a separated component of the entire Windows Explorer.

What it means is: When you click on the address bar, the address bar component is active and focus on the address bar. Then you click on the body, or press enter to navigate, it just INACTIVE the address bar component and activate the body component. Inside the address bar component, the focus is still on the address bar.

In this case, when you left click on the address bar component, such as New button, Sort button, or blank area, and don't release left click, you will see that the address bar resumes the focus and shows the dropdown list.

This bring out the issue that when you click the New menu and select Folder, it will go back to the address bar focus and show the dropdown list. OR when you click on the address bar, then click on the New button, and then you want to click on the explore body to close the New dropdown list, but the address bar dropdown list shows.

    Bug 2:

When you click on the address bar, paste the path and press enter very quickly, it will navigate to the path and then show the dropdown list later.

    Bug 3:

Open a new explorer, go to Downloads folder, then click on the address bar, then click on the body (blank area, don't select item) to hide the dropdown list. Then open a new tab, go to Documents folder, again click on the address bar, then click on the body to hide the dropdown list. Then go back to the first Downloads tab, you will get a "Persistent" dropdown list that would not be closed, no matter you change folder, or switch to another tab, unless you click on the address bar again.

Or open a new explorer, add a new tab. In the second tab, go to c:\. Then go back to the first tab, click on the address bar. After pressing enter button, quickly mouse left click to the second tab. Then the "Persistent" dropdown list will show.

    Bug 4:

When you click on the address bar at the position that the "close" icon will show, the close icon will be triggered and clear the address bar.

    Bug 5:

Open a new explorer, you should be able to press Ctrl+N to open new explorer. But if you click on the tab, then Ctrl+N will not work (But Ctrl+T works).

    Bug 6:

Open a new explorer, click on the address bar, press enter. Then open a new tab (by clicking the + icon or Ctrl+T), then close the first tab (don't switch the first tab). Now the dropdown list will not work. You cannot select item inside the dropdown list. And you cannot navigate by changing the address bar.

Currently in the Folder Options, uncheck the Privacy "Show recently used files", "Show frequently used folders", and "Show files from Office.com", and then Clear File Explorer history, can reduce the items in the dropdown list.

  3. Microsoft Edge Address Bar

    Hi Zach,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. We appreciate your interest in Windows 10.

I suggest you to follow the below steps to open actual address of websites with short forms as you wish:

    • Open Microsoft Edge, click on More actions(...) at the right top corner.
    • Click on View advanced settings, under Search in the address bar with
      click on down arrow.
    • Choose <add new>, try to add the default website.
Secondly, as opening pages in new tab is set by design, I suggest you to provide this as a feedback.

Hope it helps. Feel free to contact us for further assistance, we will be happy to help you.

  4. Is there a way to reduce or move the explorer address bar navigation arrows?

Disable File Explorer Address Bar Path History?

Thank you both for sending over this link. Unfortunately, I had already followed those steps. I took screenshots showing my config in case it helps. The "autocomplete" or "autosuggest" feature is effectively turned off. Here are the steps to reproduce: 1. I enter this address manually in File Explorer: "C:\Windows" 2. I close File Explorer and reopen it 3. I start typing "C:\W..." and it doesn't pop up. I believe this is the autocomplete/autosuggest feature that is disabled and working correctly. 4. However, instead of typing, if I click on the dropdown arrow, I see "C:\Windows" in the list. This is the part I'm trying to get rid of. Thanks!
