  1. Is there a way to reserve a drive letter?

This is really more of a convenience issue than anything else. I have a situation where I need drives F and G available for scheduled file backups, and I like to play a game which involves mounting an ISO as a virtual drive, which would normally become F. Earlier today, I discovered a way to keep F and G available by creating to small ISOs and putting shortcuts to them in the startup folder. Then at backup time, I can just unmount drives F and G and plug in the flash drives. That seems to work fine, but since it seems a bit awkward to create ISOs just for that purpose, I was wondering whether there might be another way.

    :)

  2. Is there a way to use a USB drive to provide temporary storage for the WIndows 10 November update

You do need a minimum of 8 Gb free on the OS drive. Are you talking about HD space or memory? You seem to use them interchangeably.

Have you tried running a disk cleanup wizard (Including system files)? That may free up enough to install by itself expecially if there is a windows.old folder.

Is there a way to use a USB drive to provide temporary storage for the WIndows 10 November update

I have a Surface Pro 3 with 60GB storage on its OS drive and WIndows 10 Pro. I've got over 6GB free but have failed several times now to apply the November, either because it gets stuck or because it says it wants more free memory than I can currently give
it . The last time I tried it said it needed 7.8GB. I rather have the feeling that if I free up another slice of storage it'll just ask for more - I think I've read somewhere that it may need 15GB

Annoyingly, I have an SD card with over 20GB free but the update doesn't seem to offer me any way of using this. I note, in any case, from other posts that the SD card may be the cause of the hang.

However, I'm happy to buy a USB drive if this will get me round the problem. But how to use it?

As things stand, Microsoft seem to have delivered an upgrade that is simply impossible for many users to apply except with the most extreme inconvenience.

    Can anyone advise please?

Is there a way to reserve a drive letter?

You can if you use higher drive letters like M and N. With the USB drives plugged in go into disk management and assign them the higher drive letters. They will get those higher drive letters any time you plug them in.

  5. Thanks, I'll try that.

    Edit:

I just tried it, and it remembered the new drive letters after I removed the flash drives and restarted Windows.
