Is there a way to turn off the alphabet in my start menu?

    Hey,
So I generally like the W10 start menu with the exception of the alphabet soup in my all apps listings. It's making it look very cluttered and actually disorganized even though everything is obviously listed alphabetically.

Is there a way to turn off the alphabet letters and just list everything that I have in there alphabetically without needing to show me
    A
    B
    C
    D
    E
    etc...

    ??

    Thanks

    :)

Is there a way to make the alphabet in the app list or the sorting go away?

No, there is no way to hide/remove the alphabetic shortcuts. Sorry.

If you have apps in your windows phone up to 43,there will be no alphabetic order,if you crossed the number, there will be the order.

No. Have you tried clicking a letter? It should be an improvement over scrolling.
Otherwise - type a few letters in the search box OR use Start10 / classic shell ?

The alphabets are part of the metro UI 10 menu.
In Windows 8 they were like this.

Yes I've tried clicking on a letter, but with a hyper scrolling mouse I only need to give one flick to get from the top of my extensive all apps listing to the bottom.

It just looks really disorganized and takes up too much space:

It could be so much neater looking:

If it looked something like this!

I mean I already know / hope that it would be organized by alphbetical order, I don't need it to try to organize my brain by showing me the alphabet letter between everything.

I've checked out Start 10 but the matter is that I like the W10 menu (a lot) but absolutely HATE the alphabet dividing letters, it just makes my all apps menu excessively long and is not needed. Hell, I can save nearly a quarter or third of the screen real estate just getting rid of the alphabet between c and L.

In truth, the alphabet (semantic zoom feature) thing is a touch centric tool.
The Windows 10 menu is designed for touch devices.

  7. I would have hoped that Microsoft would have learned the hard lesson that a desktop computer is not a touch-screen tablet but it seems not. This awful alphabetizing of apps should be something you can customise or turn off altogether.

I have to admit, I'm surprised that Microsoft didn't learn. Sure they gave us back a start menu but a start menu that can't be easily customized by the user without using a 3rd part menu.

I like the way it works in general for 10, but the actual all apps menu is just a freaking mess, jumbling program icons in with the folder listings, It really needs the ability to change it so that it works more like 7, where the programs that are not in a folder are at the top and then all the foldered items underneath it.

I have a PC, it's not a tablet and it does not have touch screen (nor do I want touch screen or a tablet), give me a solid working start menu for such a PC! Is it really that hard to create something solid after 3 years working on Windows 10, especially for an organization such as Microsoft. Lord knows you have the resources to do something that offers the individual user some form of good customization besides sliding around live tiles. Which you don't even want to get me started on that whole system of lack of customization.

I'm trying out Startback ++ and it's okay if you want a Windows 7 menu, but I like the 10 menu other than the alphabet and ordering of programs and folders, I doubt that I'll keep Startback ++ after the trial period and will continue to hope that either MS or a 3rd party just does a simply Win 10 menu with a more organized all program listing.

    I could not agree more.

As someone who loved XP and Windows 7 I feel Windows 10 is going to be great! Especially after the awful Win8 mis-step.

But Microsoft simply must improve the customisability of the thing. The start menu area is the focus of how we access the operating system and it needs improvement.

I looked at some of these 3rd-party 'win7' start menu programs (like startback) but, like you, I don't want to ditch the whole W10 start menu system. Some of it is actually an improvement on 7 and I very much love the new folders where you can view all the possible options in a tape along the top. These 3rd-party apps change everything, which is not needed.
