  1. Is there a way to use my External Hard Drive to update Windows 10?

I’ve been having a lot of trouble with trying to update to the November 2021 update (I made a previous post about that here), and it’s come to the point where the only thing in my way is the fact that it’s impossible to free up enough space on the C: drive to allow for the update :/

And I do mean impossible. 22.7 GB of the 29.1 GB C: drive is taken up by “System & reserved” files, which means even if I wiped off every other thing on my PC, I wouldn’t have the 8 GB free needed for the update to happen anyway.

However, I’ve been looking into perhaps doing this with my external drive, as that has almost 200 GB free.

I’ve run into dead ends trying that though. This article on a tech website from last year claims it’s as easy as selecting “Fix Issues” on the Update page and going from there.

But there isn’t an option for that on the page. So there’s nothing I can do :/

I really need some help with this. I’m frustratingly close to pulling this off, and if I could just figure out a way to do this I could potentially manage to update it.

    External hard drive not recognised

Thanks for this. I've done what you suggested and been through all the steps mentioned in the article. The hard drive works fine on a Mac computer, and I've managed to copy the information on it. It must be a Surface issue so I'll try to get a chat line tomorrow.

unrecognised external hard drive on Windows 10

Since you already reinstalled the drivers of the External Hard Drive, let's run the
Hardware and Devices troubleshooter as it can resolve your concern. You can do that by following these steps:

    • Press the Start button.

    • Type and select Troubleshooting.

    • Click on View all on the left panel.

    • Select and run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.

If the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter doesn’t resolve your concern, we suggest that you change the letter of the External Hard Drive. You can do that by following these steps:

    • Press the Start button.

    • Type and select Control panel.

    • Select System and Security.

    • Select Administrative Tools, and a new window will appear.

    • Double-click Computer Management, and a new window will appear.

    • Select Disk Management that is located under
      Storage
      in the left pane.

    • Right click on the External Hard Drive that is not showing on the File Explorer.

    • Select Change letter and network path, and a new window will appear.

    • Select Change, and choose the letter that you want for the External Hard Drive.

After changing the letter of the External Hard Drive, we suggest that you reboot your laptop for the changes to take effect.

Let us know how it goes.

    Regards.

External hard drive not suppoted after anniversary update windows 10

To isolate the issue, we suggest that you perform the following steps below:

    • Connect the external hard drive to the different port and check if the issue persists.
    • Use different external hard drive to connect to the same port and check if same issue happens.

If the same issue happens after using different external hard drive to different ports, try to run
Hardware and Devices troubleshooter as it checks for common problem and make sure that any new devices or hardware connected to your PC is installed correctly. Here's how:

    • Press Windows key from the keyboard, type Troubleshooting and select it.
    • Click on view all option on the upper left corner of Troubleshooting window.
    • Select the Hardware and Device options from the list.
    • Click Next to run the Hardware and Device Troubleshooter.

After that, follow the steps on how to Install and Update drivers
    in Windows 10
    .
