Windows 10: Is there an app for missing Sleep option?

I have had a Win10 tablet and laptop for a while and found solutions to a few things I wanted to do on them on Tenforums (thanks). Right now I am setting up 2 Win10 desktops to replace the venerable XP machines I've been using forever. I just spent most of a day trying to figure this one out with no luck so I decided it was about time I joined so I can ask my own questions instead of reading about what other people have asked about.

One of my Win10 computers is an AMD Athlon LE1640. Win10 installed the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter and the Sleep option is missing. I know that the proper solution would be to install the correct driver but there is no way to find out what the correct driver is (trust me, I spent over an hour trying).

I wouldn't be concerned except that this computer will occasionally be idle for several days and then automatically open an application. Windows Task Scheduler will wake the computer up and launch the application so it would be nice to have it sleep while idle to save power.

Hi, if you mean you don't see a sleep option from the Start Menu or Windows key + X + Shut down or sign out for example, then have you checked the control panel options here - or do you mean you don't see sleep options here either?




As you say, this may be related to not having an appropriate graphics care driver (see below). The first time I installed Win 10 (a long time ago on an originally Vista laptop) it took a couple of days before I received the graphics driver.

Meanwhile you could try- and this is not recommended normally- downloading and running e.g.
Drivermax (free)
to see if that helps. It has me in a couple of exceptional situations.
You've specified the processor- can you complete specs for PC type/MBO etc..?

If you look at the manufacturer's site for the PC/MBO, what is the latest OS supported?

Thanks for replying. The Sleep option is not available anywhere and there are no settings for it anywhere, including the places in your pic. As I said before, I've spent a lot of time looking into this and yes, I have seen all of the threads you linked and a lot more on several forums and a lot of other sites. I'm pretty sure it is a driver issue.

Just to let you know where I'm coming from, I spend a lot of time in front of my computer, more since I retired last spring. I can generally find my way around it and figure most things out. Until he died last April my son (studied programming, put together nearly every computer I've had) was my main resource for this sort of stuff and since then I have had to learn how to use Google to figure it out. I just bought a Lenovo M5800 for my "office" (aka computer 7 junk room) and I'm planning to use this one in my shop and I have learned a lot while setting up these computers. He was using this computer for a couple of months before I inherited it and it has been running for the last couple of weeks since I did a full Windows Restore and started moving into it so if the correct driver was going to show up on its own it probably would have by now.

I am not sure what you mean by MBO. Until a couple of minutes ago the only specs I knew were what shows in the System window. I just learned how to use msconfig32 to learn the specs. I'll put them at the bottom of this post

Now that I know what it is I googled Aspire 1200 support and found the page on Acer's website for it. I downloaded & ran their Driver Toolkit. It says 9 Important Driver Updates Found and first on the list is ATI Raedon 2100 (now I know what the display adapter is) I'm sure it will want to re-start after they are installed so I'll post this and report back later.

Well, that was a bust. I should know better. The page I went to was NOT at Acer's site. It was at Driver Toolkit's site and they wanted a subscription. I know better than that so I went back to Google and this time entered Aspire M1200 (I got the model name right this time too) and found this page which says that the OS was Vista.

I can't find anything about drivers for the M1200 on Acer's site. I found a couple of pages with free drivers for it but the most recent were for Win7 and there was nothing for the display. So I guess I'm out of luck unless there is a 3rd party app that will bring the Sleep controls back.

 

I'm not sure if this driver will work or not but you could try the legacy driver on this page. Legacy

 

That looked promising so I installed it. After reboot Device Manager still shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter and Windows still doesn't have Sleep options but it installed something called AMD Catalyst Control Center which does have a Sleep setting. I am experimenting with it now to see if it works ant I'll report back when I know more.

This is, like my old laptop, elderly. I got mine running Win 8, then 10. But it ran hot in Safe Mode- the problem is as you run OS's it's not specified for, low level drivers are not compatible with the hardware, or there's no compatible BIOS update.

As there are no official drivers for Win 10, there's no guarantee this will work. That's the risk.

A basic graphics driver from MS may well not give you the proper resolution - maybe it will on an older screen.

If Windows doesn't find you drivers, you can try Drivermax (free, 2 free drivers a day).

Yep. Those pages are what I found.

So last night I plugged Lenovo into the power meter and it was using 35-55W most of the time with peaks up to about 75W when launching an application and it dropped to less than 2W in sleep. I could tell the Lenovo was sleeping because the power light blinked.

After installing the driver from Winuser today I set it for 3 minutes and came back later. The screen was dark and there was no sound from the drive but its light wasn't blinking and it came back nearly instantly. Without the blinking light I wondered whether it was actually sleeping or just "resting" so I plugged it into the power meter. It is usually between 45 and 50W with peaks up to about 80W. After sitting for about an hour while I did other stuff the power meter still read about 43.5W so I'm pretty sure it wasn't sleeping.

In the meantime I did some experiments with letting the Lenovo go to sleep and having the Task Scheduler wake it and launch something and I'm not impressed. When I came back to it a few minutes after it was supposed to wake the screen was black until I woke it with the touchpad and then it wanted to have the sign in button clicked before it would do anything. I don't know why it wants that when waking when it doesn't when I turn it on but that absolutely wouldn't work to start my program when I'm not there....

In the meantime I figured out that 43.5W works out to about 13.35 cents of wasted electricity per day. Less if I spend time in the shop and would have it turned on anyway (4-8 hours per day most days in spring/summer/fall). And in the winter I keep the shop heated to a few degrees above freezing; "Wasted power" basically ends up as heat so the power it will consume will keep the shop a fraction of a degree warmer (& maybe the heater will be needed a little less).

Now that I see how little it will cost to run I'm a lot less concerned about having it sleep....

 

Try this.
If possible make a image of you OS drive to a external drive and a emergency start disk. I use Macrium. then:
1. Go to Device Manager.
2. Select Display Adapter.
3. Double click on your video card.
4. Select Driver.
5, Select Update driver.
6. Select Browse my computer for driver software.
7. Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
8. If any drivers are listed you can choose the driver you downloaded or any driver that is on the list and see if that works.

 

Making an image of my OS drive is beyond my skill set. But thanks for the suggestion.

 

Plug in external drive. Download install and run Macrium. Tick the boxes of what you want to image and select the drive. Click the button.
That's the base image.

Subsequent images- you find the backup specification created by the above, and a couple of clicks and that starts.

A helpful tip to make sure your external drive is always allocated the same letter:
In Disk Management, allocate it e.g. letter R (some letter late in the alphabet you'll not use).
Do that when you first plug the drive in.

That means Macrium will find it next time.

Creating disk images lets you restore Windows and all your disks and partitions to a previous working state, quickly and probably without technical help.

You can recover from:
- a failed disk drive (restore to a new one)
- ransomware (which encrypts your disk)
- user error
- unrecoverable problems from failed updates to problem programs
- unbootable PC (hardware faults aside)

Images also act as a full backup- you can extract files too.

You can even use images to help you move more easily and quickly to a new PC.
Can be used with Laplink software to transfer your build automatically to another PC

Imaging can even help you sleep at night knowing you have a second chance.

Many here recommend Macrium Reflect (free) as a good robust solution and more reliable than some others. It’s
- more feature rich
- more flexible
- more reliable
than Windows Backup and Restore system images.

It's well supported with videos, help and a responsive forum.

There are other such programs, free/commercial, some with simpler interfaces, but Macrium R is one of the most robust and reliable.

How long does it take?
SSD+ USB3 - maybe 15 mins for the first system image, less thereafter
HDD + USB2 - maybe 40-50 mins
That’s with little personal data, few programs installed.

(You can and should image all your partitions and disks)

Once you've created your first image, keep it updated with e.g. differential imaging- which images just changes from the first image, more quickly, and creates a smaller image file.

You need a backup medium - say- twice as large as the total amount of data you are imaging to keep a reasonable number of differential images. This will vary dependent on the number of images you keep, so is only a rough practical guide.

Some comment that system restore isn't always reliable; if it works and solves the problem, great. But sometimes restores won't work or fail. And of course a restore point only covers a limited number of aspects of the system. That’s where disk imaging comes in.

 

System Restore has let me down more than once. I still use it though. When I have a minor problem I'll try System Restore first. If it doesn't work Then I go to my Macrium images.

 

Like I said, way beyond what I am willing to try, especially for an "if-maybe". For less than 10 cents per average day if it works and if Task Manager can wake it up without me having to click the Sign in button it just isn't worth taking the chance that I won't screw it up and have to start over again setting up the computer. Or worse screw it up and have to replace it.

As I said in the first post, if there was a 3rd party app that would bring back Sleep it might be worthwhile...
