Windows 10: Is there any way to back up the readable files from a failing hard drive when the backup...

For the past many days, my PC has been showing automatic scanning while starting Like 'scanning and repairing drive d'... Which is my separate storage drive HDD. not OS drive which was my SSD. for the First few days, I was completing the automatic scan But after a day or two I skipped that automatic scanning. My computer booted perfectly with no problem running any software.But for a few days whenever I want to open any folder on my computer hard drive, it takes so long time to load or gets stuck or shows the drive not responding. I ran a chkdsk in the command prompt. But whenever I run ch

Readable File Backup

I am setting up a new computer. In the past I have used SyncToy to back up files to an external hard drive, but I understand that it won't work with Windows 10 any longer because an older .net version is required for SyncToy. I do not want to use cloud
services. What options are there for backing up to the external drive in readable format and also have scheduled or real time backups? I tried the Windows 10 Sync Center but it wouldn't let me set up a synchronization pair to an external hard drive.

 

Free hard drive backup/restore program?

I am looking for a free (freeware) program that will back up and restore a hard drive. I'm looking to clone a few external hard drives. If the program will backup the used space instead of the whole drive this will be awesome! Thanks for any suggestions.

 

Using network hard drive for backup

It depends what sort of backup you want to do. If you're happy just backing up regular files, then there are a bazillion (really, that many!) different bits of freeware to do that. There is a good list here:

and pretty much all of them can do network backups. Some even have fancy options like encryption. Really, the most useful thing is just being able to schedule them and know they ran OK.

You may also want to make a system image backup too, and you'll find that software in the very same list.

I don't have Windows 8 as yet, so I'm afraid I can't suggest any for that platform. Personally, I use Clonezilla for image backups.
