This even happens in safe mode with networking. it seems to have started when somebody repaired my profile, and uninstalled a version of Zone Alarm. I believe Avast Free may have temporarily disabled, but I am not sure. I think that I updated Avast Free, and downloaded a new version of Zone Alarm. I noticed folders on the desktop opened after logging in after sleep mode one day. Then after a potential phishing e-mail, a program opened by itself, and URLs opened on my browser, and other things opened. I scanned with Avast Free, and found a trojan, which was quarantined. Question on viruses and documents

Once the virus is removed just use a reputable antivirus program like AVG. I suggest AVG because it does check usb devices for viruses automatically once you stick the usb drive into the usb port.

Why did the startup window get cleared?

I didn't missed any step, the list was gone and gone , even after using lot of programs the programs were not listed in that list.
