Windows 10: Is Windows 10 Optimizing My SSD Drive

I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. I was looking around and noticed that Windows 10 optimize drives, is schedule to optimize (defragment) my solid state drive. I have always been under the impression that defragmenting a solid state drive, is not advised. Has this changed?

Win 10 SSD "Needs Optimizing" How is this handled in Win 10?

I have had Windows 10 installed for 2 weeks

It seems impossible to get any info on how Windows 10 handles SSD drives. I have 2 SSD and 2 HDD. The 2 HDD were optimized automatically and quickly without any action from me. Since the upgrade to Win 10 the SSD are sitting there all dumb like the C: Solid
State Drive (Last Run (Optimization)) "Never run", "Needs Optimization". A few days ago I run "just the Analyze" on the other SSD, which had the same status as the C: SSD, and now it says that it's ok. I have to assume that Windows 10 is using TRIM on the
SSD.....? Do we have to Analyze the drives before it optimizes? Is it a timing thing?

My setting for automatic scheduled optimization is set at weekly. It's been 2 weeks and still not optimized.

Why is it so had to get info on this or am I asking the wrong questions??

W10 Cannot defrag hard drive volumes which are defined as SSDs.

No problems with the OCT/ 30 /2015 upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. The system has been running good. Recently Boot-ups were slow and I decided to Defrag the volumes on the PC's physical hard drive. Now under W-10 OS (C, RECOVERY (D, SYSTEM, Etc
are defined as Solid state drive (SSD) status “Optimization not available”.
Optimization is not available for SSD volumes on the “Optimize Drive screen”.
So, why are the physical hard drives defined as Solid State Drives? Should these SSD definition be corrected and if so how?

 

What this does is run the Trim command to wipe blocks which are no longer in use.
It does not actually defrag the drive.

 

Interesting, and thanks for the response. I understand what TRIM is, I just thought that was a separate function.

 

I have mine scheduled to run daily (optimize SSD) but just checked and it has not run in 8 days. So how is this fixed to have it run? Seems the only way to have it run it to do it manually.

 

You dont need to run that daily. If fact dont even schedule it, just run it when you feel you system is running poorly.

 

Then why have the option to have is scheduled and to have it run daily if it will not run when scheduled or daily?

 

Are you leaving your PC idle for enough time? The maintenance won't start if you are using your PC.

 

Notice that it says "optimize" and not "defragment". For a normal drive it will say "Defragment".

Windows disk optimization for SSD does in fact defrag (I believe once per month), because doing so does clean up certain directory structures which will eventually start performing poorly, but most of the time it just does a TRIM operation. The defrag is not a full defrag, I believe it just defrags MFT and directory entries.

 

Mine seems to do the same no matter how it is scheduled, might recall Windows 8.1 doing the same to me. BTW Daily is too often, unless just trying to see if it worked

 

Yeah just seeing if it worked and no I have not been on my pc for 8 days none stop.

 

Yeah, i know should not matter if on PC or not for it to know, meant doing trims everyday not necessary, once a week or more is good enough, unless doing a lot of installing and installing (writes and erases).

 

This. There are 2 things I follow for SSD's. 1. Quick Defrag with it hits 40-50% fragmentation. 2. Optimize only when you notice your system is has slowed in some areas. As a gamer, you can gauge performance speed by how fast games usually load.

Letting things go that long, its still infinitely faster than a platter drive, and extends SSD life a bit.

 

1. Just do not use word Defrag for SSD. With traditional HDD too much defragging too often will cause more wear on the drive.
Do not think one week or more is going to make a difference and trimming not sure it's going to prolong the life an SSD.
Think what prolongs it, not letting SSD write and erase large files too often, if have a software does this, move write destination folder to another mechanical drive.
