I agree totally, too much is not good either, but even a 50% file fragmentation is bad. I should explain that a file defrag is not the same as a drive defrag, file defrag wont hurt the SSD life anymore than a couple full optimizes would in a short period.

I agree completely with what @jds63 is saying. I run maintenance software once a week and that is sufficient. As he says, too much use and it will wear the hardware out.

I tend to run maintenance programs on a Saturday and I tend to run ccleaner, SuperAntiSpyWare, Malwarebytes, Avast, Windows Defrag in that order.

O.k. if talking about an SSD only need to drop the word defrag. How are you defragging files only ? And you mean get 50% fragmented in less then a week or no?

    For the full scoop:

The real and complete story - Does Windows defragment your SSD? - Scott Hanselman

SSD's do get defragged once a month if System Restore Points are enabled (volsnap). Defragmentation can be very important as SSDs run out of pointer space if files are created and deleted a lot.

The article is long, but it basically says there is no need to run your own "defrag/optimization". Let the system do it properly.

    Can anyone help me?

What I remember about trim in Win7 was you never needed to do anything with an SSD, as files are deleted trim started working almost immediately. With trim enabled there was never any fragmentation on an SSD and Win7 disabled the "defrag/Optimization" task for the SSD. I checked and mine is set to "never" and I haven't touched it, apparently that came over from 7 to 10 through the upgrade.

I couldn't see where W10 wouldn't do at least what Win7 did with SSD's as far as trim is concerned.

I have a small exe file for Win7 that verified trim was enabled and working, I won't post anything .exe but the name of it is trimcheck-0.6, here's a link to the page Index of /trimcheck

PS The Win7 backup is still there and available for me if I want to go back, I'll probably delete that partition in a couple weeks.

I just checked and trim is working for me on W10, these are the three command prompt windows that appear. You open the exe, you press enter and it writes a small test file. You then press enter to exit the program, wait a little bit (I waited about 10 seconds) reopen the program and see the results. In my case CONCLUSION: TRIM appears to be working.

    I used a Defraggler from Piriform.com.

tl;dr. I read several articles like that before, hence my philosophy of do it only when it needs it, period.

I somehow got a copy of SSDLife Pro, prolly the same as Trimcheck.

Seems to have been an issue even in Windows 8.1, mine is set weekly (default setting) does the same thing. For now just keep tabs on it do it according to how much you write and erase, as daily is too often anyway.

  14. A little off topic

but as I have just bought an SSD for my laptop, and done a fair bit of research....thought I would share this..

If the SSD is underperforming or just been added try the program in this link and if alignment is off there is a free program to realign it.

    good luck

    Hi,

There's a lot of urban myth on defragmenting spinners and aging them just as there seems to be a lot of confusion floating about on how to properly maintain SSDs.

For spinners, the best defragmenting program is the one that makes sure your drive doesn't get fragmented in the first place and does not require user interference.
Not sure if there's a W10 version available but either way, this level of programming does not come cheap.
It will however, contrary to popular belief, make your spinner last longer and it will definitely run faster.

For SSD, of course these get fragmented too but the bottom line is that it really doesn't matter as the read/write latency is so short it's doubtful anyone notices the difference in practice.
Furthermore, actually defragmenting this will reduce its lifetime although nowadays their lifetime is likely to surpass any spinner.

Trim does not defragment anything, it just flags cells as being available for writing again.

Worried about fragmentation of your drive? Image it and restore it subsequently. It will be defragmented automagically.

    Cheers, *Wink
