  1. Issue with drive coming out as GPT Protective partition on one dock but not the other.

    Hi Everyone,

I have this strange issue with my external USB docks and PC.

Lets call them Dock 1 and Dock 2:

If I format a drive in Dock 1 and try to use it on Dock 2 the drive won't mount and comes out as GPT Protective partition. However, If I go and insert it back in the original Dock I formatted it on, boom it works perfectly.

Same thing visa versa. If I format a drive on Dock 2 and try to use it on Dock 1. Same issue.

I can only ever use the drive on the dock it was originally formatted on. I also have other docks around and I have tried and its hit or miss. Works on some not on others etc etc.

    What could this be?

  2. GPT Protective Partition. How to read data / recover hard drive that is in this state.

    Hi everyone,

Recently I've had a hard drive of mine, a WD Red Network Attached Storage drive, suddenly convert to GPT Protective Partition.

I have no idea what has caused this and no idea how to reverse it.

I've been online and scoured the internet for solutions, software that can read the partition, but it seems as if few people are having this issue on a Windows 10 PC. Some forums say people are trying to read a GPT disk on windows xp and it shows up as GPT
    Protective.

I have all of my data on the hard drive so erasure is not an option, several programs I am using can scan the drive and reveal some files and data intact.

If anybody has a solution, or knows any program able to read a GPT Protective Partition, please contact me.

    Thanks, .

    W7 Hard drive partition issue

to get rid of that 100 meg windows partition that setup creates for you on a new install on a blank hdd:

    - press shift+f10 when on the partition management screen in setup <-- this opens a command prompt
    - diskpart <-- start the windows command line partition management tool
    - list disk <--- list the installed hdds in this computer for the next step
    - select disk 0 <- might have to replace 0 with the number of the correct disk
    - clean <-- this will erase all data on the disk you selected one step up- dont use the wrong disk!
    - create partition primary <- creates a primary partition taking up all space on the drive, adjust the command if necessary
    - exit, exit to exit diskpart and the command prompt
    - click refresh in partition manager and select your newly created partition and install to that

Issue with drive coming out as GPT Protective partition on one dock but not the other.

    GPT drive

I just upgraded my computer from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I have software installed on an SSD and data on a 4TB second hard drive. Somehow, in the upgrade, my data drive turned in to a GPT Protective Partition. I would like to return it to a Primary Partition
without losing the terabytes of data on it. Any suggestions?
