Windows 10: Issue with microphone from headset

I have a colleague who has been suffering issues with his headset when it is connected to his Dell Latitude 7520 machine. It happened probably a few months ago but he seems to believe it's happened since he downloaded one of Windows patches. The update occurred on May 12th, 2020. The issue is when he connects his headset into the machine and does not pick up the microphone.


So what I have asked him to do is to see whether he could uninstall/update his headset/sound drivers but he said the driver is the latest one. He seems to believe it is the KB4556799 which may be affecting the microphone from his headset. He did some research and other people have mentioned about this too. He tried to uninstall this update but he cannot due to a security update.


One of the forums he looked into said the following

"Another issue, which might leave some thinking they've gone hard of hearing, is that KB4556799 reportedly screws up system audio. It apparently does this by deleting drivers and resetting configurations. Sound distortion, playback and a lack of audio are the big warning signs of this issue. Some even claim sound is coming out of their speakers and headphones at the same time."


For the time being, he said he is relying on his Apple headphones but even that doesn't go swimmingly well. He has to take them out and pop them again from time to time for his microphone to work on his Apple headphones. His main headset for work is a Microsoft LiveChat LX-3000 and like I mentioned before it was working just fine before the update KB4556799.

My headset microphone outputs static/very muffled sound

In order to help you resolve issues with the microphone on headset, we suggest the you run the built in troubleshooter in you PC. Here are the steps:

• In the Search Box, type Troubleshoot and press
  Enter.
• Look for and select Recording Audio, and press Run the troubleshooter.
• Follow the onscreen instructions.

From the description provided, I understand that windows is unable to configure the microphone settings for your headset device.

I would suggest you to use the below steps and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

Run the Microphone Setup Wizard

• 
  Type “Set up Mic” in Cortana’s Search box.
  
• 
  Follow the instructions provided to set up your microphone.
  

Check your microphone’s drivers

• 
  Type in “Device Manager” in the Search box and select it from the list.
  
• 
  Expand Sound, video and game controllers
  
• 
  Right-click (or tap and hold) your microphone device and select
  Update Driver Software.
  
• 
  Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
  This option will scan the Internet for the correct version of the driver or determine if you already have the most recent driver installed.
  You may be prompted to restart your computer to install the driver.
  

Manually turn up the mic gain

• 
  Type in “Sound” in the Search box and select
  Sound (Control Panel) from the list.
  
• 
  Select the Recording tab.
  
• 
  Right-click (or tap and hold) on the active microphone input device and select
  Properties.
  
• 
  Select the Levels tab.
  
• 
  Manually drag the Microphone gain to a higher level and click
  Apply.

External microphone not showing in the Recording tab

My Windows 10 laptop is not recognizing any external microphones. I have two headsets: a Bluetooth one and one for an audio jack. Both headsets work correctly on other devices. When I connect the headsets to my computer, I can hear audio, but the microphones
do not work.

Here are the steps I've taken so far:

• Updated drivers (they were already up to date)
• From Sound Settings, headsets do not appear as options for the input device
• Ran the microphone troubleshooter - headsets do not appear as options
• From Control Panel > Sound > Recording, headsets do not appear as options. I have selected the disabled and disconnected devices options.
• From Microphone Privacy, all apps have access to the microphone.
  

That's everything I found online to fix this problem. Any suggestions?
