Windows 10: Issue with the Microsoft default Preview pane viewer in Windows 11

**User Test Case: **The user enables the Preview Pane in Windows 11 File Explorer.The user clicks a PDF or another type of file.Problem We Are Facing:When the Preview Pane is enabled and the user clicks a file, Windows File Explorer launches the preview component prevhost.exe.This process loads COM components that implement the interfaces IPreviewHandler and IInitializeWithFile.IInitializeWithFile is a standard Microsoft interface that “exposes a method to initialize a handler—such as a property handler, thumbnail handler, or preview handler—with a file path.”We have a Windows File Explorer

Windows 7 Preview Pane

I use the preview pane quite often so I can watch videos without having to launch an application to play them. I do this with mostly with tutorials. Most of the tutorials were in quicktime format; quicktime takes a significant amount of time to open on my system, so I used format factory to change them into MP4's (they will play in the preview pane). Just out of boredom, I installed a new convert, called CoverterLite. Now every single video that I converted causes WMP to crash even inside the preview pane. If I were to change my default media player would that affect to preview pane as well? Or does it require so registry editing?

 

Preview pane not functional / causing system issues

We can see here that you're having an issue with using the preview pane for File Explorer. Since using the preview pane affects the CPU usage when trying to view Office files, we could suggest that you changed your File Explorer View setting into the Navigation
pane by performing the following steps:

• Open File Explorer.
• Click on the View tab.
• Select Preview pane to remove it from being highlighted.

Once done, try to open files using Office apps and check if this helps your Surface Pro 4 works fine.

Video in the preview pane

Thank you so much for your reply.

What I really need to know is how get the video to play in the preview pane. Prior to Windows 10, this worked wonderfully and was an asset. Now, it requires making changes to the Windows registry - not recommended due to the enormous amount of issues with
Windows 10.

Any other suggestions?
