  1. Issues booting with a 4K external monitor

Okay, so I've been scouring the internet trying to find a solution for this issue that many people seem to be having as well but haven't found any fixes. Hoping someone here can help.

I recently got a Dell XPS 15 7590 second-hand (now I know what you're thinking - there's your problem - well it's not a major problem but something that I can't get my mind off). Now, this laptop runs beautifully on its own, with no problem whatsoever.

The issue arises when I try to boot the laptop up from a cold boot with a 4K external monitor attached (LG 27UD68). When I used my previous XPS 15 9550, the external monitor would instantly show the windows welcome screen and that would be that. But with the 7590, the external monitor just shows a blank screen and after a few minutes, the BSoD DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE appears. It then restarts itself and it boots just fine from then but it takes a few minutes to go through that whole process which I don't have the time for.

I have tried using another HDMI cable as well as a USB-C to HDMI cable, when I used a 4K 30Hz USB-C cable that seems to resolve the issue but when I use a 4K 60HZ cable, the problem re-emerges.

I have tried reinstalling the display drivers and downgrading the BIOS but doesn't seem to be working.

The laptop boots just fine without an external monitor and if I then plug the external monitor in after the laptop has booted it works just fine.

I've also noticed when I used the 4K 60HZ usbc-to-hdmi cable, the external monitor shows white and black flickering lines, but not when I use a 4K 30HZ hdmi-to-hdmi cable - anyone knows why that is?

Not quite sure if its a driver issue, a Windows issue or a hardware issue.

displaylink (dynadock 4k) not working with windows 10 laptop

I have a Toshiba dynadock 4k with an external monitor but I cannot see this monitor listed in my Windows 10 laptop display settings and cannot make my display appear on second monitor.

DisplayLink website suggests this may be a Windows 10 issue.

How do I get this working?

  3. Fuzzy fonts and large icons on external monitor - Is scaling the issue?

Yes, shortly after posting I realized my solution fixed the external monitor and got rid of the huge font and boxes, but made the fonts and boxes small in my main monitor.

The problem for me is that I have a Surface Pro 4 (4k resolution) with an external monitor that's only 1080p. Since 4k is four times the resolution of 1080p then scaling is always off.

I fixed the issue by buying a 4k external monitor that I'll use for gaming and at the same time fix this issue. (they are spendy though). If both monitors have the same resolution the scaling will work.
