Windows 10: Issues w/ Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 (KB3163018)

I have a Windows 10 system upgraded from Win7. Windows Update failed on this recent cumulative update. The web has lots of hits about this. After trying a number of fixes, the following worked for me:

1. I went into Disk Management and saw that my System Reserved Partition was 100MB vs the minimum recommended (according to some sites) of 400MB.

2. I used MiniTool Partition Wizard (free edition) to resize the System Reserved Partition to 450MB. That required burning a CD from a downloaded ISO.

3. Since the Windows update failed again, I deleted the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download (I did NOT delete the DOWNLOAD folder itself, just the contents)

4. BINGO! The update installed.

Hope this helps someone else who may have this problem.

Problem installing Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3163018),upon restarting, I get the message “We couldn’t complete the updates.Undoing the changes

When I attempt to install the Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3163018), the installation appears to go OK, and I am told that I need to restart my computer to complete the update. Upon restarting, I get the message
“We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing the changes”.

 

Actually most of the problems are due to Windows firewall being turned off.

Open services by typing in services.msc in Run,right click Windows firewall service and set it to automatic.Start it if it is stopped


Make sure the service named security center should also be the same.


Go to windows update and retry the install.

 

That's an angle I hadn't seen in my (too long) search for a solution. But since a number of places said that when Windows 10 is installed from scratch one gets a 400MB System Reserved partition, I thought I'd try that, and for me it worked.

I presume that it is generally recommended to turn ON Windows firewall?
