Issues when updating to KB3213986 and when doing an in-place upgrade

So, I've been having some major issues with the latest Windows updates (KB3213986 (OS Build 14393.693) & KB3216755 (OS Build 14393.726)). So I'm still running on build 14393.576.

During the first restart after an update I get the "Windows couldn't complete updates. Undoing changes..." error and update history will show the updates as failed.

These issues also occur with standalone installers and with updates installed through WUMT.

Event viewer shows the error as follows:

So far I've tried the following procedures to no avail:

    Microsoft's update troubleshooter

    sfc /scannow

DISM /checkhealth and /restorehealth (i've tried /restorehealth with both online resources and local repair resources from a Windows 10 UBS stick), none are giving errors or telling me that something has been repaired.

    Restarting the update service

    Deleting the SoftwareDistribution, $Windows.~WS / $Windows.~BT -folders.

    Using tweaktowns Windows -repair.

Tried with just the OS drive connected to the motherboard.

I've also tried to do an in-place upgrade of Windows 10 through an image that I've created using the MediaCreationTool and creating a bootable USB stick with Rufus. Was hoping that would solve the issues but the installation always halts at 33-34% and throws the "Windows 10 installation has failed" pop-up Window.

When looking through Event Viewer and the C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log -file I found that the setup is throwing the same 80070057 error that Windows update did! :

Some interesting things I picked up from setupact.log can be found on the attachment.

Other updates like definitions for Defender and updates for Office applications are coming through and installing just fine. It's just the cumulative updates and the in-place upgrade installations that are failing constantly. I've also tried a different .iso (July 2016 edition from Dreamspark) and that gives me the same errors as well.To be honest, I'm pretty much at a loss here and any help would be greatly appreciated.

    :)

Windows 10 Pro Cumulative Updates Repeatedly Fail

I have tried every method I can find to install the Cumulative Updates since the Anniversary update was installed. The latest I have tried is KB3213986. Right now, I get this error:

    Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3213986) - Error 0x80070776

If I run the troubleshooter, it shows that issues were fixed, but when I try the update again, it fails with the same message. If I run the troubleshooter again, it finds the same issues and shows they are fixed again.

I have tried downloading the standalone installer, manually deleting the software distribution files and even a repair upgrade, which also fails.

All other Windows Updates install fine.

What information do I need to post to troubleshoot this issue?

    Hi Roy,

Thanks for the suggestion. Device Manager looks normal and there aren't any problem devices. :/

Edit: I'm pretty sure it has something to do with drivers though, as the first line in the log file where error 0x80070057 can be found, states:

2017-03-03 17:54:44, Error SP Failed to get driver packages from the online system. Error: 0x80070057[gle=0x0000007a]

Build 14393.726 was pulled off by Microsoft, probably next Patch Tuesday [there were problems with it]. Or maybe they'll have an even newer version.
