  1. Issues with defender, I'd appreciate some other perspectives.

    History:

I made a gaming desktop with my friend a month or so before covid gummed up the works and since then it had been working ok. I was dumb and used norton 360 and I think it deleted some files for some games and made it impossible to run them. I uninstalled norton about a week ago and windows defender wouldn't engage. I had a bunch of issues with some game launchers too so I did a fresh install and wiped all personal files.

Once the new install took, I logged in and I downloaded all the newest updates from "Windows Update", but one wouldn't download and gave me an error message 0x80070643 no matter how many times i tried. I then went to windows security, and downloaded from "virus and threat protection updates" this made the error message go away. Defender seemed to be working and there were no new updates, but defender was running weird compared to another computer I was using and since I just wiped all personal files and it was a fresh install there shouldn't be too much for defender to scan.

    1. Defender would on multiple full scan tests scan for about 10-15 minutes but it would clock the scan as being 2-6 minutes long.
    2. The files while scanning would reach from 1-1.8 million files scanned, but then turn that number into 400k-1mil once the scan was done.
    3. The "mange providers" "whos protecting me" area should have "Windows Antivirus on" "Windows Firewall on" "Web protections off" but it will sometimes say I've got nothing and provide a link to go to the microsoft store, but If i wait 5-10 min they will eventually pop up and it will have "Windows Antivirus on" etc.

I have another computer like I mentioned, it's got roughly 500GB worth of files and its full scans take around 10 minutes and it reaches about 900k files. It never changes around the numbers of files or time from while it's scanning to when it's done, unlike the desktop. The performance of the computers are roughly the same with the desktop being noticeably better (back when it was working).

I got help from microsoft but they were not able to resolve the issue, they had me download theMediaCreationTool20H2 file and reinstall the OS again and when that didn't work they scheduled an appointment with a level 2 technician for a week out.

I'm kind of curious if anyone knows what the issue is if there is one at all. Is defender running as intended, I've only recently switched to PC and don't know what normal behavior is exactly? If it is, then why does one computer give seemingly erroneous times and numbers and have a lot of issues with displaying whether the antivirus is on or not vs the other. Are there any fixes I can try in the meantime while I wait for a level 2 tech?

TLDR: Windows defender is not working the same as the other computer I have and is giving false times/files scanned as well as scanning loads of files on a clean PC. In addition it says I have no protections until about 5-10 minutes after login, at which point it finally will register windows firewall and antivirus.

    Windows Defender Not On

    Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Community. Your interest in Windows 10 is much appreciated.

I would suggest you to try the below methods and check:

    Method 1:

I would suggest you to run virus scan to make sure the computer is free from virus.

The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove virus, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.

Microsoft Safety Scanner Download - Windows security

    Method 3: Run the SFC.

    Follow the below steps:

    • Open Command Prompt.
    • Select “Run as Administrator”.
    • Type “sfc /scannow” without quotes and hit
