Windows 10: Issues with displaying comment tags of music FLAC files

Hi,

I'm fully aware that Windows so cold "native FLAC support" is not really working as it should and due to it I have a significant issues with my music collection of 2000+ FLAC files.

I added ID comments to most of these files using Mp3tag or MediaMonkey but nothing gets displayed under the comments tab in detailed view in file explorer. If I right click file -> Properties I can see the written comment under ID-Tags tab, but nothing under comments in Details tab. If I change ID-Tag comment here it doesn't automatically change under comments in Detail and in file explorer detailed view. However if I add comment under Details it does change and I can see it on explorer. This is hardly a solution, I don't intend spending days re-writing all the comments!

I encoded the same collection in .m4a container using Freac converter with Core AAC encoder and all the comments magically appeared in file explorer, same as in Details tab and if I change comment on whatever place (ID-Tags in Properties, mp3tag. mediamonkey...) they automatically change under Detail and file explorer.

Tried the same with one .mp3 file and same issue as with flac.

So, this is clearly an issue with Windows support for FLAC, since the added comments can be easily seen in any other software than Windows. I've seen some similar topic in the last couple of years here and each time your experts came out with no solution whatsover. So far, you were basically just ignoring this issue and "actions" were more than dissapointing.

I really hope you will actually look into this instead of using fluffy words and throwing the ball away!

I have Windows 10 latest fast ring build, but this was **** as long as I can remember!

Displaying the Comments Property for FLAC files

Is there something special about a FLAC file that prevents Windows 10 File Explorer from displaying the contents of the Comments Property?

I am using the Comments Property field to log the catalogue numbers of my digitised record collection. When I view MP3 files with File Explorer, it displays the contents of the comments field along with the title, artist, track no, etc. However, if I convert
the files to FLAC format, the properties remain except for the comments that now appear blank. But, if I convert the files back to MP3 then the comments reappear. So it seems that the Comments Property data is saved but File Explorer is unable to display it.

Do I have File Explorer installed and set up correctly?

Is there a problem with File Explorer itself?

Any advice gratefully received.

It is now April 2018 and Windows 10 explorer still does not appear to be able to save or show the Rating, Comments or Tags field for FLAC files

I want to save my music files in FLAC and windows 10 has declared native support for FLAC files since at least 2015. However if one right clicks on a FLAC file, chooses Properties and selects a star rating of, say 4, and clicks apply or OK; The rating
does not get displayed in explorer. It apparently doesn't get saved at all. Seems that Comments and Tags fields also do not save for FLACs.

My methods of organization and exporting music to USB drives depend on the rating settings in windows. I search using windows explorer based on Rating:=4 or 5 or whatever to select only music with high ratings to copy to my usb drives. This works well
with MP3 files but even years after native FLAC support was announced, you seemingly cannot even edit one of these windows file properties (Rating, Comments, Tags) for a FLAC file.

Is there any progress being made on this old issue that is splattered all over the interne t for years and years???

 

some FLAC Tags in Explorer not visible

Tags in FLAC and OGG are stored in VORBIS comments which are different than MP3's storing in ID3 tags. FLAC can store tag information in both VORBIS and ID3 tags, but the FLAC standard only guarantees information in VORBIS. The issue people are having
is Windows cannot view the tags with Explorer, and possibly Windows Media Player, without additional software but playback of FLAC is possible.

I gave up trying to troubleshoot this problem a while ago and moved music playback over to a guaranteed FLAC media player like "MediaMonkey." It easily reads the tags and can do most of what WMP can, it just doesn't look as pretty.
