My computer is a Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14ARE05. I am running on Windows 10.Recently, I have noticed that my "F2," "F3," "3," and "E" buttons do not function correctly during or following running a high memory/CPU program. This problem has escalated to having these buttons nearly unusable even when there are no programs running.Oddly enough, if I hold down the "D" key and press one of the nonfunctional buttons for example "D + E", it will detect both as keypresses will input as: "de", yet the nonfunctional keys still doesn't respond on their own.The "D" key is the only key that can allow me

Issues with "F2," "F3," "3," and "E" keys: keypresses are inconsistently or never registered. Is this an issue with the hardware?

My computer is a Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14ARE05. I am running on Windows 10.

Recently, I have noticed that my "F2," "F3," "3," and "E" buttons do not function correctly during or following running a high memory/CPU program. This problem has escalated to having these buttons nearly unusable even when there are no programs running.

Oddly enough, if I hold down the "D" key and press one of the nonfunctional buttons (for example "D + E"), it will detect both as keypresses (will input as: "de"), yet the nonfunctional keys still don't respond on their own.

The "D" key is the only key that can allow me to press "F2," "F3," "3," and "E".

Sometimes pressing two or more nonfunctional buttons over and over will eventually get them to work on their own (like tapping between "E" and "3" back and forth), but their functionality is immediately lost upon pressing the "D" key.

I have cleaned beneath the keys using compressed air, I have tried using the keyboard troubleshooter to detect problems, I have reinstalled all keyboard drivers, and I have plugged in another keyboard to see if its an issue with the laptop's keyboard.

The keyboard troubleshooter came up with no errors, and an external keyboard works just fine. I have also tried uninstalling recent programs that I added in case they were interfering with my keyboard, but to no avail.

Any ideas for a solution to this would be appreciated. I would also like to know what is causing this problem in the first place. It seems to be a "keyboard ghosting" sort of issue, but I'm confused as to why holding "D" while pressing the nonfunctional keys seem to work.

I am using a mouse with extra buttons mapped to E and 3 to type all this out.

Issues with "F2," "F3," "3," and "E" keys: keypresses are inconsistently or never registered. Is this an issue with the hardware?

Hello Connor6, I'm Quinn, an Independent Advisor, and I'm glad to help.

Given the details you've provided, it is likely a hardware issue. There are 2 main possible causes. The most likely cause is a hardware issue with the keyboard. This could be due to a malfunctioning keyboard matrix, which is responsible for detecting keypresses. The other one is keyboard ghosting as you mentioned, which usually occurs when the keyboard cannot register multiple keys pressed simultaneously. The fact that holding the "D" key allows other keys to work suggests a possible issue with the keyboard matrix circuitry. Holding the "D" key might temporarily alter the circuit, allowing the nonfunctional keys to register.

The solution regarding this issue, first, would be to continue using an external keyboard if it works fine. The next solution would be to replace the laptop's keyboard. Given the steps you’ve already taken, this appears to be a hardware failure that cannot be fixed through software troubleshooting. If you decide to replace the keyboard yourself, you can find replacement keyboards online and follow guides or videos specific to your laptop model for the replacement process. If you're not comfortable replacing the keyboard yourself, consider taking your laptop to a professional repair service.

I hope this helps you diagnose and resolve the issue with your laptop's keyboard. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to ask.
