Hi, you might like to open this tutorial index page
Windows 10 Tutorial Index - Windows 10 Forums

then search that page for Local

There are many articles on managing accounts.
Here are some that may be relevant - but there are more.
Local Account - Switch to in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
Microsoft Account - Switch to in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
Password of User Account - Reset in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

I would be wondering what caused your start menu to stop working.

Do you have System Restore enabled?
Do you use disk imaging so you can easily restore your PC to a previously working state?
    - very strongly recommended... especially with Win 10.

Unforunately I didn't think to create a restore point after I upgraded to 10. The pc does have a factory image I believe but it's for 7. What image programscdo you recommend?

Hi, system restore points are irrelevant where the upgrade is concerned. They don't protect a whole OS, only some parts of the current OS you're running.

You do have the ability to return to your old system within 30 days.. a copy of it (more or less) is still there... via Settings, Windows Update, Recovery etc...

Disk imaging is your personal compressed copy of the partition(s) or disk that you have selected. It can and should be updated periodically, before and after a major change. Updates are much smaller than the initial image.
E.g. Macrium Reflect, Aomei Backupper.. some report Macrium is much more reliable for GPT formatted disks and SSDs- something I'm shortly going to find out much more about with my new laptop.
The free version is adequate, plus their boot disk/USB flash drive plus suitably large external backup storage.

    E.g.
What is Disk Imaging? Free Disk Image Software.
(Easeus is another well-known imaging program provider).
(Typically these companies also offer good partition management programs).

Acronis TI was good years ago, but is now bloatware.

Is there a way to reinstall the upgrade? Would that fix the issue?

My original user account is still there, if I could fix the start menu issue, I can just delete the new user I created.

Start menu problems like that have been attributed to a conflict with AV programs in some cases. You could explore that first (and do search this forum for threads about start menu not opening- there are quite a few).

As you have upgraded rather than doing a clean install, first check for 3rd party program conflicts e.g. try a clean boot (search for 'clean boot "Windows 10"' if unsure how or see Tutorials (above).

You can also see what happens in Safe Mode.

If in either of those cases the start menu opens, you can reasonably think it's a conflict rather than corruption.

(Note: a repair of Win 10 is available by an in place upgrade install - there's a tutorial on this- effectively a similar process to installing Windows, but retains almost everything - try the above first)
