Cant find Computers on Network by Hostname but can via IP

Microsoft made changes to networking while remove Homegroup from Windows 1803 and that caused some network problems.

One of those problems is that Windows has problems to resolve connection between IP-address and hostname in peer-to-peer networks.

I have solved this "Cant' access \\Computer" issue using hosts file. See step 6 on my example of network settings. This work in my home network shares.

Homegroup removed! How to get network sharing work with Windows 10 v1803.

  3. Cant find Computers on Network by Hostname but can via IP

OMG! I was gonna update that all the PC's with Issues were moved to 1803!

I had to deal with and revert back when the Anniversary or Creators Update crippled Webcams... Now this!

    Its SO annoying.

I hope a Microsoft Engineer see yours, mine and anybody's posts regarding this and do a patch or something. Its frustrating coz I have 2 Businesses having issues now with the resolution of Hostnames failing on the Software! FFS!

Thanks SO much for your response and a solution!

Cant find Computers on Network by Hostname but can via IP

    Hello,

I have software that has and connects to a Host Computer for the Database. Now I would assume a recent Windows 10 Update could have screwed everything up, but I have had this weird issue before that sometimes resolves itself or swaps.

Basically, the Software is set to resolve finding the database via Hostname on "Client" PCs, but they now cant find the Host Computer. I ping with Hostname, it fails... I get the IP of the Host PC, ping it, its there. I goto the network folder, type \\Hostname,
    it cannot access.

The only way to connect now is to change the registry to resolve via the IP, it now loads the software?

The issue with that, despite putting effort into keeping the IP the same, sometimes the Host somehow changes IP, so the Clients then fail, so I change back to Hostname, its fixed. So it is best to keep the Registry as resolving via Hostname.

OR, even though the IP is correct, it cannot resolve, the ping fails, but Hostname ping and changing the registry, WORKS!

Another strange thing is, its not all or nothing, some Client PC's can gain access via Hostname, but others won't and require IP.

This to me means its related to getting and accessing Hostnames on the Local PC and not the Network?

What could be causing this issue?
