Windows 10: iTunes Installation Error - error status 1603

I just got a new phone, and I was having a problem getting iTunes to recognize it. I was able to sync my old phone and my iPad, but not my new phone. One of the suggestions was to uninstall iTunes and reinstall it -- so I uninstalled it, but now I cannot reinstall it. I downloaded the latest version of iTunes, and when I run the install it fails to install and exits with an "installation error."

When I look in the event logs, I see:

Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: iTunes. Product Version: 12.6.1.25. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Apple Inc.. Installation success or error status: 1603.

I have tried cleaning up all the loose directories, removing all the other Apple software (except iCloud Settings), restarting a number of times -- still no joy.

Any thoughts on this?

WMDC installation fails with error status 1603

I read that prior to posting here m8, hence the attempt to install it as admin. But thanks anyway.

I resolved it by removing and deleting every device/driver/program that had the word "mobile" or "WMDC" in it.... surely not the right thing to do but I didn't have much time and I was very frustrated, and besides it works now! For how long? I can't say....

Could you first delete all your temporary files. File Explorer, right click C:, properties, Disk Cleanup. You may also want to clean up system files which should be an option on the following screen.

Then disable all AV / Security software and proceed with install.

Thank you for the suggestions, still the same error -- and I did the system files, too.

 

Honestly, these companies have to make this easier or we are all going to revolt.

Found this. Has a link to removal steps, which you've likely mastered, and then suggest trying an older version of the install.

I just installed the latest version of iTunes the other day (2 days ago) without issue. Works well here. Windows 10 x 64 latest version (1703, Build 15063.296). Non-insiders.

That said, make sure you get the installer from Apple, and that it's the correct version - there's one for 64-bit and another for 32-bit OS's. However, the site will usually detect your OS and automatically offer the correct anyway. Still...

 

Ken - thanks for that link - installed 12.6.0.95 and it went. Now I am getting an error about a component not being installed when I load it up -- I'll work on that... I think it is the APplication Support modules, they are not installed...

 

If you post error I'm sure the forum will provide its input.

Maybe something you swept up when deleting folders. Think you said you get iCloud intact, is it still working?

 

I am 100% sure I deleted something during my sweep... it appears that iCloud is working properly, the calendars are updating between Microsoft Calendar and iCloud Calendar without a hitch.

The error is: A required iTunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall iTunes (-45075).

I have tried a repair install, but not a reinstall yet. I was unable to find installers for Application Support 32 and/or 64 bit, which are missing from my system.

Any help would be appreciated.

 

I did once read it's a good idea to purge your system of everything Apple related and try again. So I would say also uninstall the iCloud stuff and if you have things like safari and try again. It's a bit rubbish having to go through this but it's worth a try. I don't think Apple cares much for windows users and their stuff can be very buggy.

 

So... I ended up finding installation files for Application Support 32 bit, Application Support 64 bit and Mobile Devices on a Windows 7 box -- copied them over, installed them and voila -- all is good! Was even able to sync my new phone.

Great news. It's infuriating that you had to go through so much to get it working again. I do find apple products test my patience. I love and loathe their iOS devices and iTunes, lots of good stuff but plenty of bugs. Not that MS is much better in that respect!

 

I have had an Apple laptop (PowerBook, MacBook,MacBook Pro) since 2002... about a year ago I looked at my 2012 MacBook Pro and thought maybe I would look into a new machine. I was underwhelmed by the new MacBooks and new MacBook Pros. So I sat on it until this spring when a Microsoft rep came to work and demoed the new Surface products for us (Surface Pro 4, Surface Book and Surface Studio). I bought a Surface Book the next day -- it is the best laptop I have ever owned. Hands down... and with my education discount (I work at a college) the model I bought was still expensive, but just within the topside of my budget. My complaints about it are minor -- but it is at least a little innovative, stable, fast and does everything I need and more.

I have also had an iPhone since 2008 (and an iPad since like 2010ish). This issue was spurred by me upgrading from a 6 to a 6s Plus (getting old). But I have been underwhelmed by the iPhones of late, too. iOS does not innovate, it follows everyone... we get bigger and faster, but no longer get better and more from Apple. Right now the only thing that tethers me to my iPhone (that I like just fine, but don't love anymore) is that I have an Apple Watch (which is a yawnfest but is OK) that will work only with an iPhone... and there is no watch that works with a Microsoft phone. I love Samsung hardware, but detest Android OS.... I just bought my son a Samsung Gear S2 watch for his birthday, and it is pretty awesome... better than my Apple Watch, for sure.

Anyway... sorry for rambling so much, but I feel the need to preach about how Apple has lost its mojo, and Microsoft is simply making better hardware... including phone hardware... too bad Windows Phone just never got traction to have peripherals and apps made to make it a real viable platform.

 

Don't apologise for rambling, It's interesting to read. I got the apple watch too shortly after it came out. Cost a small fortune and then good old Apple releases a newer faster model in a matter of months. Grrrrr! I find it underwhelming too. It's good to have a notification of email or message at a glance but to be honest I only use it to tell the time now. Trouble is I am heavily invested in apple eco system, watch, apple TV, carplay etc so it's tough to break away. At the moment I just tell myself, Microsoft is for computers and Apple is for mobile devices. I never considered a Gear Watch, my wife has a Samsung galaxy so we will have to take a look at it!
