Windows 10: Java on Windows 10

Working on my wife's laptop.

Windows 10 pro, 64 bit. Patched to the most recent version....

Only windows defender for AV, no other Antivirus.



She had an older version of Java, tried to update to the newest version, 8u181, so she uninstalled the old version.


Now, NOTHING from java will run. Not older installers, not the official Java removal tool, not the 64 bit or 32 bit offline packages....

User Access Control pops up the window, then nothing. Nothing in the task manager, just nothing. vanishes.


Windows logs show nothing. Literally nothing. Shows the UAC confirmation of elevated permissions. That's it.



Tried to install from safe mode, that doesn't work (safe mode gives error 1601 on any install, apparently you cannot install things in safe mode any more).



I can install other software, that all works fine, so its not the installer. Its just anything from Java.

Java 8, IE 11.11, Windows 10 - Java won't verify. Java control panel won't open.
