  1. jerky stop motion video, dropping frames after upgrading from win7

    I just upgraded today.
We use the PC as a media center, so we watch live TV using ATSC cards.
Every TV program I tried, the video drops frames, watching someone walk across the screen, they do not move smoothly. The sound is ok. Seems every half second, frames drop.

This did not happen in win7.
I have 8gb ram, AMD phenom 9650 quad core, sata 2 drive, GTX260 nvidia card.
    I upgrade the nvidia driver.

Would a newer video card make it work properly?

    :)

  2. Using Media Player with Windows 10 - jerky videos

Recently upgraded from Windows 7 to 10. Videos that worked OK with Windows 7 now are jerky, stuttering and seem to go into slow motion with Windows 10. Can anyone help or is this a teething problem waiting for a patch?

  3. Problems playing wmv files in Windows 10

Just upgraded to Windows 10 and my videos (file format .wmv) won't play. They are automatically opened in the Windows 10 "Movies and TV" app but then don't play properly (very slow motion, jerky and garbled sound). Everything was fine in Windows 8.1.
    Help!

And youtube is also bad, halts, jerky frame dropping video.
I can swap a newer GT610 or GT640 nvidia card and see what happens. BUT, I may just downgrade back to win7.
    What a disappointment.

One solution here was buy a new desktop...

One thing I will say ...

As this system is used as a Media centre i am assuming that it has direct access to a lot of data, you has to consider that any modern OS, (I consider any Windows from Vista onwards as modern as this is where the design changed), has a lot of "housekeeping to do at the beginning (after initial installation). The majority of this housekeeping is related to the search indexes, If you are using a Microsoft based playback solution, (that accesses data and information from the File system) this information is essential for you enjoyment of your media. If your system is one that contains it's own database then you will need to wait for this to populate but could probably switch off the Windows Index system.

This Housekeeping phase can take a while, (hours to days dependent on data amount involved), also as this housekeeping is set to only occur when the system is idle, it is best practice to switch on the system and leave it running but unused for a while ( I normally let it run at least overnight)

After this period ( check the disk activity light if available) you will have a better idea of the capabilities of your hardware - If you are streaming from the Net then the download speed needs to suitable for the media - minimum 2MB/s for 1080 HD and 8Mb/s for 4K. For local playback you need fast hard drives, 7200 RPM+, with a reasonable amount of free space

Obviously the Graphics card will affect the playback but for 1080 HD the load is well within the range of most medium level cards / chips 4K and above may need an upgrade

The overhead for the "Bling" of the display on Win10 is actually less that that used on win7 to support the Aero Interface *Wink

  7. I noticed indexing was off. so I turned it on and it is indexing files and folders right now, up to 70,000 files indexed so far after running an hour.
I am on verizon FIOS a couple years now with no problems downloading stuff.

There was no problem with video on win7. TV worked, netflix worked smooth flowing video.
So something happened involving windows 10.

I upgraded as win7 is way past support and the win10 was a free upgrade which is still available to the end of this year.

the video stutters even with a silent sounding hard drive.
Later today I will put in a GT620 nvidia card robbed from another PC and see if it helps.

Not sure if you did an upgrade or a fresh install, one thing is that upgrades from Win7 to Win 10 are known to show some strange issues at times so a fresh install may be worth a try if not already done. ( you now have a Digital licence so should not have any issues with re-activating)

Also you may try using DDU to completely clear all traces of the old driver then install the latest driver from the nVidia Site, ( never use the bundled windows driver if possible as it is often slightly les specific than the one on the nVidia site)

  9. It was an upgrade, not a fresh install.

Do you have a link on how to do a fresh install?

Any chance of keeping windows.old win7 option?

It said I had the option to go back to win7 during the install for 30 days.
One problem. I have 1TB of videos in my video folder, will a fresh install destroy my files?

I keep finding gaming video stutter references, which is what I think mine looks like sort of,
Do you think this is relevant?

Not a gamer so cannot comment directly, but, as the link you quote is concerning the Creators Update 1703, which has been recently superseded by the Fall Creators Update 1709 that contains corrections to solve the problem I would not expect this issue to be what you are seeing, unless you are running the older version, ( 1709 was only released in the last couple of weeks )

  11. interesting, how do I find out which I have and how to upgrade ?

    it is running 1709

just watching the news, and the text banner that moves across the screen bottom, stops and starts.
It stops for a quarter second and moves for a second, that is how awful it is. It is consistently perfectly halting and starting.

The recommended system of many forum members here is to use System images (Using Macrium Reflect Free), rather than the Windows old method as a safety net. as this does not have any cut off date and is frankly a lot more reliable'
if your video store is on a separate partition or drive you could take an image of this for backup purposes, but a fresh install will not affect other than the system Drive / Partition, so should not be an issue ( a separate drive or partition and using the "location" tab on the properties of the User Folders is my preferred way of managing data whilst allowing windows to work as designed ( I use SSDs for system drives so do not keep data on these if possible)

To find out which version you are running press WinKey + R and type winver or click on the start menu and tpe winver

To get the latest Windows take a look at How to get the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update - Windows 10 Forums which is a large thread here giving a lot of information - luckily most of the pertinent information is in the first post *Wink

The symptoms you describe for the news banner seem like what be caused by problems with the internet feed rather than the local system, have you also seen pixelation or smearing ?

  14. Yes, those files are in the user folders.

I had after the upgrade tried to install WMC, but it failed badly with DISM and dotnet type error messages. I found some articles on Sacnhealth and Restorehealth for DISM, but that failed too.

So I found SichBoPvr is a decent substitute.

Ok As you have the latest windows, you may have a new feature that can help you diagnose your issue - The Task Manager now has extra data visible in the Performance tab on the GPU

Not all GPU's are supported but if yours is i would set some content running and then open the task manager to the performance tab ( set always on top on and monitor the CPU, Drive and GPU to check where the load is most evident and hopefully you may see a spike where you have a glitch on screen. - at least then we would know where to start *Smile
