  1. Joycons showing in device manager, being treated as Xbox One controller?

So I paired my joycons via bluetooth, everything seems normal. They're showing in device manager with a controller icon but when you click on them it only shows my Xbox One controller in the list, tries to assign that to the joycons, and thus the joycons are useless. The driver for the joycon itself says it's using a generic controller driver from '06. Help? I was just gonna use my joycon to map WASD to for games since that causes me bad hand cramps to use a keyboard.

Xbox One Controller Wired Connection Registers as Generic Controller

    Hi Trey,

Using a micro-USB cable is one way on how you can connect your Xbox One Controller to a Windows 10 PC. Once connected, it will install the most current drivers needed for your controller. Regarding your concern, have you tried using another micro-USB
cable? If not, we suggest that you uninstall first the current driver for your Xbox One Controller on your computer, restart, and then connect the controller using another USB cable.
There's a possibility that it affects the computer to get the correct driver for your controller.

If your Xbox One Controller still treated as the generic controller, we recommend that you manually install the driver by performing the following steps:

    • Press Windows Key + X and choose Device Manager from the list.
    • Once Device Manager opens, locate and right-click Xbox One Controller.
    • From the menu choose Update Driver Software.
    • Click on Browse my computer for driver software.
    • Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
    • Locate Microsoft Xbox One Controller on the list and click
      Next
to install it. If you can’t locate Microsoft Xbox One Controller driver, you might have to uncheck
      Show compatible hardware option.

Let us know if that works for you.

Windows 10 stopped reacting to Xbox controllers (nothing in device manager)

    Hi Swoog3G,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that it can get difficult if the devices are not working as expected. I see that you have tried few steps that might help us. However, we can go ahead and try few steps to see if we can resolve this issue.

    1. What is the version of Windows 10 you are using? You can refer this article to

Check for operating system information in Windows 10.
    2. Were there any changes made to the operating system recently?
    3. Did you try Unplugging the Controller then Re-plugging it back?

One possible reason as to why your Windows 10 device can't detect the controller is due to outdated device drivers. We suggest checking if there are updates available for the controller and your Windows 10 PC. I suggest you to follow the below steps,
    and check if helps.

Method 1: Use a Different USB Cable

If you’re using a wired controller, a broken USB cable can be the cause. Try a cable with no problem and check to see if the problem is resolved. If you are still facing issue with Xbox controllers,

Method 2: Add a device in Settings

    1. Go to Settings.
    2. Select Devices.
    3. Select Connected Devices.
    4. If the controller is not listed under Other devices, kindly click Add a device. Follow the on-screen prompts to manually add the device.
    5. Restart your computer so that the changes can take effect.

Method 3: uninstall all the current drivers.

Before downloading the new drivers, uninstall all the current drivers. In order to avoid duplicate conflicts among several drivers, one must uninstall the duplicate audio drivers as well.

    1. Press Windows Key +x
    2. Click Device Manager
    3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers
from the list in Device Manager.
    4. locate the audio driver Xbox 360 controller
    5. Right-click on it and select on
Uninstall device from the drop-down menu.
    6. Check the box that says,
Delete the driver software for this device
      and hit the uninstall button
    7. Go to Views tab and click on
Show hidden devices from the drop-down menu.
    8. Then search for duplicate Xbox 360 controller if any. Right-click on it and hit the Uninstall option.
    9. Once the process complete restart the PC.

Method 4: Install the driver using File repository.

    1. Press Windows Key +x
    2. Click Device Manager
    3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers
from the list in Device Manager.
    4. locate the Xbox 360 controller
    5. Right-click on it and select Update drivers
    6. Then click Browse my computer for drivers software
    7. Click on browse, scroll down and navigate to the location:
      C:\Windows.old\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository
    8. Click on OK and click on
Next, this will install the driver software
    9. Once the process complete restart the PC.

I also suggest you to refer this article on

    , and

, and check if that helps.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Joycons showing in device manager, being treated as Xbox One controller?

Xbox One Controller Not Working, Not In Device Manager

Hey so I am having a bit of a problem here. I got a new Xbox One over the weekend and decided to use it on my PC for some of my PC games as well.

However, it simply does not work. It was listed in Device Manager, so I decided to right click and uninstall all the controller drivers from the Device Manager hoping it would reinstall them and work properly. This was not the case however, they are gone for good.

So in short, nothing relating to any controller is showing up in the Device Manager. It is not even showing up on the "Devices and Printers" portion of the control panel either.

I have downloaded and installed the Xbox One Controller drivers from Xbox themselves (for Windows 7/8.1 apparently since it's preinstalled on Windows 10.. however I uninstalled them and now they're gone, so I went with these) and it installed fine. However, same thing.. not showing up anywhere. It's as if they aren't even installed. I even tried reinstalling and nothing. My PC acts as if nothing is plugged in.

I have tried different Micro USB cables and all my USB ports as well and same thing, nothing.

When plugging the controller in, it just rumbles for a split second and that's it.

Does anyone know how I can resolve this? It's driving me bonkers at this point.
