JPG files from phone show incorrect file size (18GB) although size on disk shows (4KB).

In December I transferred photos on two occasions from my android phone to my Surface laptop and the files will not open. It says an unknown error has occurred. The JPG files from the phone show incorrect file size (18GB) although size on disk shows a
reasonable size (4KB). I can open other pictures that I have transferred from my phone as well as other pictures from other sources. I have tried to open in photos, paint and VLC media player. I cannot move them since the computer thinks they are giant and
it says there is not enough space when I try to copy them. I am up to date on windows 10 updates.

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that you see incorrect file size for JPG files on your computer. I’ll certainly assist you with
    this.

    However, please let us know:

    • How were the files imported on the computer?

    • Does the file show as compressed (blue file name)?

    • Are you able to re-import the files?

    • Are the folders connected to OneDrive?

Meanwhile, you may want to refer the steps mentioned below:

    1. Right click on the JPG files and select
      Properties.

    2. Under
      General tab, click on Advanced.

    3. Check if the option for compress is checked or unchecked.

    4. Toggle the option and click on
OK and check if there is any difference.

    We await your response.

    Regards,

    Hi Nikhar-

1-The files were transferred with a cable from phone to computer. I don't remember if it was a copy to the new folder and then a deletion in the original folder or if it was a cut from the original folder and paste in the new one.

2-The file name is not blue.

3-I cannot re-import the files. they were deleted from the phone after the transfer. I am sure that I would have checked that the files were transferred before deleting the originals, but perhaps I only confirmed that the correct number of files were transferred
and I did not open a file to see that they were open-able. ? I have two folders of these damaged files. The transfers happened two months apart. I did not discover the error in the first set of files until after the transfer of the second set.

4- These particular folders are not connected to one drive.

5- The compression property is checked. When I unchecked it and tried to apply the change it just locks up and then eventually throws up an error saying it can't apply the change because there is not enough size on the disk.

Maybe this compression explains the difference in size on disk and the actual size (?), but the problem still exists that these files have the wrong size listed. I guess am hoping for some way to fix the wrong size being attributed, which I assume happened
during the transfer and I think that is causing the problem with opening the files. So, for some reason the sizes got inflated.
