Windows 10: jpg thumbnails blurry but nef crystal clear win 11 explorer?

When I look at jpg thumbnails extra large icons or any other size in win explorer updated they are blurry. NEF from my nikon d500 of the same photo are crystal clear as are the jpgs when viewed in any other viewer Photoshop, Lightroom, Photos, etc. Any ideas why this would be? Windows is up to date as is Explorer. 64GB RAM, 12th Gen Intel Core i7-12700 2.10 GHz, 64-bit operating system.

Unable to show .nef thumbnails on windows 10

When going to any folder with .nef files, from my nikon d850, no thumbnails are shown. I have tried:

Click on View tab and check if the below options are checked:

• Display file icon on thumbnails
• 
  Show preview handlers in preview pane.
  

d. Uncheck the below options:

• 
  Always show icons, never thumbnails
  
• 
  Always show menu
  

e. Enable or disable any other options you wish to make changes on by checking and unchecking the adjacent option boxes.

f. Click on Apply and OK.

This did nothing.

I can see the .nef files from all of my older cameras like the d750.

  Are you able to view the .nef files in other layouts?
  
• 
  Does the issue persist only with .nef files?
  

Method 1: You may be facing this issue due to the presence of virus/malware on your PC. Scan your PC for virus/malware attacks by running the anti-virus software. Run the anti-virus software twice to detect and confirm
any malware/virus on your PC and check if the issue is resolved.

Method 2: If you are still unable to view the
.nef files in a thumbnail preview, follow the steps below and check if the issue is resolved.

a. Press Windows logo key on the keyboard, type
Control Panel and select the top most search result.

b. Click on view by located at the top right corner of the window, select
Large icons and click on File Explorer Options.

c. Click on View tab and check if the below options are checked:

• Display file icon on thumbnails
• 
  Show preview handlers in preview pane.
  

d. Uncheck the below options:

• 
  Always show icons, never thumbnails
  
• 
  Always show menu
  

e. Enable or disable any other options you wish to make changes on by checking and unchecking the adjacent option boxes.

f. Click on Apply and
OK.

g. Close the window and check if the changes are effective.

Windows not building thumbnails for specific folder of .NEF photos

I have a folder of RAW .NEF photos which my Windows 10 PC isn't showing the thumbnails for in File Explorer (for this folder only - and actually it is showing thumbnails for only a few random ones).

(These particular photos were taken with a Nikon D610 that I borrowed - higher resolution than more normal camera - but I don't think this should have anything to do with it. I have a copy on an external hard drive, and the thumbnails are showing properly when I plug that in.)

I tried:

• changing the default program for .NEF images to Photoshop and back to the Windows Photos app
  
• using disk cleanup to delete all thumbnails
  
• changing the thumbnail size
  

None of these solved the problem.

Adobe Bridge shows thumbnails properly for this folder.

I don't know if it's anything to do with having turned on Files on Demand for OneDrive after the Fall Creators Update (the folder in question is in my OneDrive folder). I can't remember if I had a problem with these thumbnails before I updated, but I don't think so.

Update: I think this is a problem with OneDrive Files on Demand in File Explorer. I've noticed that thumbnail generation is pretty slow across the board or my OneDrive folders. Thumbnails don't seem to persist for more than a few days. I sometimes see a flash of thumbnails before it re-generates all of them in the folder.

Does anyone know how I can force thumbnail generation?
