Is it possible to prevent Windows to reset many system settings to default after a major update (Fall Creators Update)?

I recently installed the Windows 10 Creators Update on many of my PCs, and as with previous "major" update releases, I noticed that many of the system settings, including things like:

    • Energy options in device manager ("allow device to wake the computer from sleep"
re-enabled for mice and keyboards which is annoying because I
      intentionally turned these off)
    • basic mode of displaying the taskmanager and many more get reset to
      their defaults.

Since major updates are coming approximately twice a year, I was wondering: why does Windows do that, and is there a way to turn this behavior off? It is especially annoying if you install a computer for a novice user, and after an update you have to redo all these customization steps again.

On the other hand, many things like explorer settings stay the same, for example things like "show hidden files" or "show file extensions".

    So the main questions are:

    • which settings are reset after an update, and what's the criteria behind that selection, where others aren't?
    • is there a list of the things that are reset during a
      major update for reference?

    Hi,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

I understand your inconvenience. We will assist you with it.

To assist you further with this issue, please provide us the following information.

    1. What is the make and model of your computer?

    2. Did you receive any error message?

    3. Are you using external speakers? If yes, what is the make and model?

I would suggest you to refer the following methods and check if it helps.

    Method 1:

I would suggest you to refer the suggestions from the below article and check if it helps.

    Fix sound problems

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/fix-sound-problems#v1h=tab06

    For headphone issues

I would suggest you to set headphone as default device and check if it helps.

    Follow the steps:

    a) Right Click on the sound icon at the bottom
    left corner
    at the taskbar.

    b) Click on Playback devices.

    c) Check if you are able to find the icon headphone in the list of connected playback devices.

    d) If yes, click on the icon and then click on Set default option.

    e) Click on Apply and then on OK.

    Method 2:

Sound problems can be caused by cables that aren't connected properly, damaged drivers, incompatible drivers, sound settings, missing updates, and problems with your sound card.

I request you to follow the below steps:

Step 1: Uninstall the Sound card Drivers

    a. Press “Windows Logo” + “X” keys on the keyboard.

    b. Click on “Device Manager” from that list.

    c. Search for the Sound driver from the device list, right click on it and then select
“Uninstall”. On the un-installation window, if you have an option:
“Delete the driver software for this device” you may select that and then remove the corrupted drivers from the computer.

    d. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete it and the
    restart
    the computer if prompted.

After the restart, please go ahead with the next steps to install the latest drivers and check if that resolves the issue.

Step 2: Update Driver Software from the Manufacturer’s website.

Hope this information helps you. Kindly post back with the updated issue for further assistance.

    Thank you.

Just had some major Win update prompted which I installed, and now my default sound is dead.

    Default Windows Sounds

    Hi Richard,

Aside from a visual prompt, a sound can be heard if an error has occurred on the computer. This is one of the functions or features of Windows 10. If you want to disable the error sound, you can do so by following these steps:

    • Access Control Panel.
    • Choose Sound.
    • On the Sound windows, click the Sounds tab.
    • Under Program Events, look for Default Beep.
    • Click Default Beep.
    • Click the Sounds drop-down menu, and then choose (None).
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
