Windows 10: Just when you think it can't be worse!

I've had 10 for a few months now. During that time I've had several automatic updates. Most have been unnoticeable, a few others were anti productive. The first and the last (two days ago) have been horrible. When I first downloaded 10 I immediately lost my CD/DVD drive. No matter where I look my computer can't find the old one. It also disabled sound from anything I recorded. The latest update is making me log in if I leave the computer for more than a couple of minutes. It also makes me wait before the log in window pops up. I'm beginning to think that switching from 8 to 10 was not a good decision.

All we know Is that launch date is 29th July and Microsoft has said that it may take weeks to roll out through windows update.

so when you mean eligible installations that means that i will maybe get it in July,August or even in September . so when do you think i will be able to get my installations?

 

Would you consider doing an in-place upgrade install, also known as Repair install ?

I was quite impressed with the in-place repair install (I used the 10586 build).. whilst many had experienced problems installing 10586 or upgrading to it for the first time, it was trouble free as regards associations and configuration, and resolved my problem- albeit much more focussed than yours. It did however switch System Restore off again.

As it's a big step (effectively a reinstallation of Windows) you would be wise to create a disk image before doing it just to be safe.
(Aomei Backupper or Macrium Reflect -both free, + external storage medium for the backups. Disk imaging should be done routinely and kept reasonably up to date so you have a defined state you can revert to by restoring the image.

 

Smart thinking regarding the imaging. Images have saved my bacon many times.

 

I always have backup images on an external usb drive available, especially if I make any major changes to my system. I also tend to save them to a usb flash drive as well to be safe. One thing is for sure, Murphy's Law will eventually come into affect and bite one, just a matter of time.

 

Yep.. now what we really need is an MS revolution that entirely separates the OS from user amendments, modifications, drivers, data.. a protected partition which is relatively inaccessible to the user. Thus (e.g.) the registry is split into what resides in the OS partition, and that which resides in user space related to program installations, drivers etc, and all user space and storage- including library folders- is on a different partition.

That could mean the OS is maintained and updated in relative isolation. No more inserting odd files into Windows or System32 folders..

Surely that would reduce the need for reliance on regular OS backups, far more essential (apparently) than is the case with Apple.

MS's legacy model OS is just that- born of its origins in small disk space and limited memory, where everything was inextricably intermingled, and remains inseparable with limited exceptions, and invites users to place vital personal data on the same partition as the OS.

The chance of it happening? What, a major investment for reliability and ease of maintenance? Now, where's the market case for that? And hey, it could significantly reduce traffic on forums such as this.. Besides, we're used to having to recover Windows.. it's such fun! *chuckle

 

Sorry for not being more tech savvy, but I have very little idea what the heck you guys are talking about. Is this a problem I can fix or do I need to take it to a shop?

I think we're waiting to see what you think of the idea put to you.. with details of how to do it - the in place repair install. Looking back, I think you should run
chkdsk C: /F
from a command prompt before that just to verify your disk.
(Press Win key + X, click Commmand prompt (admin) and copy/paste the command at the prompt, press 'Return.
You should be prompted that this will happen after a restart.)

Do you need further information? It's a relatively straightforward automated process once you have the Win 10 installation medium. Please let us know. Thanks.

You can remove the DVD in Device Manager and follow the instructions here above

You can try opening REGEDIT and look for :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318

you might find 2 of them, right click and delete if the HP instructions do not work from above
